At the an n ual meeting of the Ne w E ngland H istoric G e ne alogi S i n Januar 1 898 S ' T h at cal ociety, y, , the ociety voted an alpha b e ti c al list of the present m embers of the S ociety be printed with th e proceedings of this day ' the preparation of the same to be ' under the direction of the C ommittee on Rolls . fiv e Well aware that , with more than hu ndred changes i n its m S R 1 893 a embership since the ociety p rinted the olls in , the p p e ar anc e of the proceedings would be followed by numerous com m uni c ati ons calling attention to errors , or containing s uggestions , I desired to have a rep rint , embodying the corrections , issued a I d . t was month later than the procee ings , however , imperative to distribute the type at once and I was disappointed as to this plan . Although the lists were carefully copied by M r . Frederic W il P k lard ar e , it was necessary for me to devote some forty hours , w u a ith considerable vol nteer assistance , to the tedious l bor of verifying these lists by compari ng them with the chronological x s r ecords . An e'ual amoun t of time was e pended in a certaining that the n ames and residences of the members were correctly wr itten , but the result has proved that more time was re'uisite to R perfect the olls , especially in the matter of academic degrees , and the proceedi ngs contain a n umber of misprints that ought not to have occurred . T h e S ociety publishes its Rolls of M embership so seldom that I feel strongly the importance of having them correct , and early in A u R pril determined to continue my labors pon the olls , and to print them again an d at my own e x pense . I have now adopted 4 P REF ACE . n e w m of k n s w ethods eepi g the record , which , if contin ued , ill obviate in the fut ure a repetition of m uch of the labor that has been essential to prepare the Rolls for the press .
