Birch Hill Recreation Area 457-4488 101 Wilderness Drive, Fairbanks The Parks and Recreation Department, through partnership with the Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks, offers the Birch Hill Recreation Area and the Jim Whisenhant Cross Country Ski Trail system for recreational use. Winter Season Hours of Operation: Monday thru Friday: 12:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Saturday: 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Sunday: 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Cold Weather Closure - During extreme cold temperatures (-25oF or colder) the Cross Country Ski Center will not be open. At this temperature the trail lights will be shut off. The warmup hut will remain open. Birch Hill Ski & Snowboard Area 353-7053 Located on Fort Wainwright Keep the whole family busy and physically active during the long Alaskan winter. Birch Hill Ski and Snowboard Area offers skiing, snowboarding and tubing for all ages and abilities. With snow-making capabilities, Birch Hill is the first hill in the interior to open and boasts the only night-skiing venue in the Fairbanks area. Spring Break hours of operation: Open daily from Noon–7:30 p.m. Recorded Ski information: 353-7053; Customer Service Desk: 353-6795 BP World Ice Art Championships 451-8250 3030 Phillips Field Road, Fairbanks February 22nd - March 27th, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily Ice Alaska is in its 27th year hosting the largest annual ice art competitions and exhibitions in the Western World. The Fairbanks event, the BP World Ice Art Championships, has grown to a month long attraction involving over 70 teams from all over the world. The competitions and the accompanying kids park, attract more than 100 ice artists and approximately 45,000 visitors from Alaska and all over the world. The Single Block sculptures are nestled in a grove of trees and Multi-Block ice sculptures have a backdrop of large trees with attractive sunscreens separating each piece. The center of the park provides ample open space for all the Kids Park activities which are highlighted by the big slides and an ice skating rink. The Kids Park is open from Monday, February 22nd (the first day the park opens) until the gates are closed for the final time on March 27th. This magical Kids Park is like any children's playground, ONLY it is constructed entirely from ICE. There are slides and rides for all ages, challenging mazes, and life-sized sculptures of favorite animals, popular characters and toys to touch and climb on. Fairbanks Children’s Museum 374-6873 302 Cushman Street, Fairbanks The Fairbanks Children’s Museum will be open during the spring break. Their hours of operation and planned activities are: Monday: Museum Closed Tuesday - Saturday: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. The educational programming and art room activities will focus on oceans and undersea animals. They will host St. Patrick's Day at the museum with themed activities on March 16th and 17th. Also, on March 17th, from 5:30-6:30, the museum will host the US Army Band as a part of the Family Concert Night. It is also their Two-Dollar Thursday, where the museum admission is only $2 all day and it includes the concert.
