The Friars reached their seventh consecutive post season appearance in 2018-19 after being selected to the NIT. The Friars concluded the season with an 18-16 mark and placed eighth (7-11) in the BIG EAST. This season, the Friars will return 10 players, including five starters, to the roster. The veteran team is poised to compete for a BIG EAST title and will look to secure its sixth bid in the NCAA Tournament in the last seven years. The Friars are led by a strong group of seniors in Alpha Diallo, Kalif Young, and Maliek White, as well as graduate students Emmitt Holt and transfer Luwane Pipkins. Diallo (New York, N.Y.) returns for his senior year after being named to the Second Team All-BIG EAST in 2019. Last year, he tied for the most double-doubles in the BIG EAST with 10, while averaging 16 points and 8.1 rebounds per game (second in the league). He was named NABC All-District Second Team and USBWA All-District. Diallo was awarded the team’s Jimmy Walker Most Valuable Player Award, and led the team in points, rebounds and assists. In August, he helped Team USA earn a Bronze Medal in the Pan Am Games after leading the team in scoring (15.0 ppg) and rebounding (5.6 rpg). Anchoring the front court this season is a pair of experienced forwards in junior Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) and senior Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario). Watson also helped Team USA capture a Bronze Medal in August. Last season, Watson was the Friars' second leading scorer averaging 11.7 points last season. He also averaged 5.2 rebounds in 23.5 minutes per game. Young has been a consistent player throughout his career and has played in 101 games with the Friars. Last season, Young averaged 3.8 points, 4.0 rebounds per game and always brought energy to the floor. Sophomore guards David Duke (Providence R.I.) and A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.), who aslo represented Team USA at the Pan Am Games, look to continue to contribute in their second year with the Friars. Duke started all 34 games as a freshman, averaging 7.1 points and 2.6 rebounds per game. Reeves averaged 9.8 points and 3.0 rebounds per game, despite missing nine games due to a foot injury. Last season, Reeves was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week three times. Reeves led the team in three-pointers made (45) and three-point field goal percentage (38.1 percent). Both Duke and Reeves earned the team’s Most Promising Prospect Award. Senior Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) also will play an integral role in the backcourt this season. Last season, White played in 33 games, making 19 starts, and averaging 6.7 points and 1.9 rebounds per game.
