City Report HYDERABAD Population and Housing Census 1998 Government of Pakistan Statistics Division Population Census Organization www.census.gov.pk iii PREFACE The process of urbanization and continuous expansion of cities in terms of population & size has resulted in increasing civic problems. This. naturally, necessitates the availability of precise and detailed data pertaining to urban centers separately to assist the development process in these areas by providing a relevant data base. Although, the census publications i.e. district, provincial and national reports of the 1998 Census which have already been released carry data by rural/urban areas for all statistical tables, yet there is tremendous demand for exclusive tabulation ot data for urban crties, especially the big ones. The requirement is imperative in view of implementation of the Devolution Plan. It has, therefore been felt appropriate to publish separate city reports for big and medium crties, having population of more than 4 lacs and 1 lac to 4 lacs respectively. The city report consists of five parts viz (1) write up which carries general description of the city, (11) broad analysis of population census data, (Ill) broad analysis of housing census data. (IV) statistical tables while (V) provides additional information in the form of annexures I hope this report will be a valuable addition to census publications already made available and will serve its purpose well. Any comments in this regard shall be welcomed.
