THE CHANSONNIER D'ARRAS: A CRITICAL EDITION THE CHANSONNIER D'ARRAS: A CRITICAL EDITION By ROBIN LOCKERT, B.A. (HaNS.) A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts McMaster University Copyright (c) by Robin R. Lockert, 1993. MASTER OF ARTS (1993) McMASTER UNIVERSITY (Music Criticism) Hamilton, Ontario TITLE: The Chansonnier d'Arras: A Critical Edition AUTHOR: Robin R. Lockert, B.A. (hons.) (University of Regina) SUPERVISOR: Dr. Susan Fast NUMBER OF PAGES: iv, 235 Abstract The poetry and music of the trouveres flourished in the twelfth- and thirteenth centuries. Trouvere works, found in collections called chansonniers, offer interesting challenges for researchers for many of these works as a whole still lie untranscribed. Existing in manuscript form in the Arras Municipal Library in France, the Chansonnier d'Arras consists of 42 chansons and 31 jeux partis (some with lacunae). A facsimile edition was published in 1925 by the Societe des Anciens Textes Francais under the editorship of Alfred Jeanroy. The following thesis is a transcription of the Arras chansonnier with an introduction that explores several facets of the critical approach taken. The first section places the manuscript historically in relation to other trouvere manuscripts. This is followed by a section which deals with the city of Arras and the impact this city had on the trouveres, Two analytical sections follow, one on mensural notation and the other on melodies. The section on mensural notation outlines the two opposing ideas concerning the application of rhythmic modes to these songs; the section on melodies focuses on the difficulty of analyzing these works using modal and tonal systems. A section on performance practice follows this, in which evidence from thirteenth- and fourteenth-century literature are used as resources for performance practice. The final section is the editorial policy, which explains I) the orthography of the manuscript and, 2) the approach taken in the transcription. ii Acknowledgements This project has offered me some interesting challenges as well as given me insight into the preparation of critical editions. I gained a new respect for editors of such documents and learned to question their findings, two fundamental building blocks for growth and originality. I would like to thank my advisor Dr. Susan Fast for her encouragement and careful editing of my prose. Her insightful suggestions helped make this document something of which I am proud. Dr. Madeleine Jeay of the French Department also deserves a great deal of credit. Her help with the medieval French was invaluable and this project could not have been realized without her aid. As well, Dr. Fred Hall deserves my gratitude. Originally, he helped me put the proposal together and later served as a second reader, suggesting ways in which I could improve the final work. Finally, to my friends and colleagues, lowe a special debt. Katie Wreford and Scott Schweyer lent me their extra computer (free of charge!) and several other friends most notably Jane Finch, were sounding boards for my ideas and frustrations. And finally, I would like to thank the Anderson family because I was extremely honoured to be included in their family celebrations during the Holiday seasons, events which made my stay in Hamilton all the more enjoyable. iii Table of Contents Abstract. .ii Acknowledgements .iii Introduction 1 Arras 16 Mensural Notation 22 Melodies 38 Performance Practice .52 Editorial Policy 60 The Edition 63 Appendix 224 Bibliography 231 iv 101. l~)2. r" "t--\lt'lUtOU~((ts: _~,L. __:... .....__.__ ~ .. _:=.::... The complete manuscript was obtained by the Abby Saint-Vaast in Arras in 1625 and was deposited into Arras Municipal Library in the nineteenth century. Composed of three manuscripts that are united because of similar formats and writings, the complete collection is catalogued by the Municipal Library as number 657. The [mal work in the manuscript, Le Roman de Marques de Rome, has been dated at around the second half of the thirteenth century.1 This date is based upon the signature of the scribe Jehans d' Amiens Ii petis, who completed the last two works in the manuscript." His name appears in the following inscription: "Cis livres .fu escris en I'an que l'incarnarion coroit sour mil et If' et soissante dis et VIII, as 1 Alfred Jeanroy, ed., The Chansonnier d'Arras (paris: Societe des anciens textes Francais, 1925), 6. 2 Jeanroy indicates that the foliation of the manuscript is modern. Jehans' name is written in his own hand on folio 2l2v; as well, his name appears at the beginning of the manuscript in a different hand and much later style of writing. The chansonnier section appears to be written in a different writing style from Jehans', thus, the date 1278 may or may not have any validity when applied to the chansonnier. 1 2 octaves de li mi aoust, sil escrist Jehans d'Amiens li petis.,,3 However, Alain Lerond in his monograph Chansons Attribuees au Chastelain de Couci, indicates that the chansonnier section" can be dated as late as the beginning of the fourteenth century.5 In the manuscript, the chansons and jew:partis of the chansonnier bear the folio numbers l29r through l6Ov. A facsimile of the chansonnier was produced in 1925 under the editorship of Alfred Jeanroy, and it is upon this document that the present critical edition is based. The complete manuscript contains two hundred and twelve folios. The following chart outlines the contents according to Jeanroy:" Folio lr-32r. This section begins with the rubric "Ci endroit conmence li livres qui estrais est de philosophie et ensement de moralize", Included in these folios is d' Alard de Cambrai's Moralites aux Philosophes. 3 Alfred Jeanroy, ed., The Chansonnier d'Arras, 5. 4 The complete manuscript, including its many books, is called the Chansonnier d 'Arras by the Arras Municipal Library and is identified as 657. From this point on in the introduction, when reference is made to the Chansonnier d'Arras, it will describe only the chansonnier section found on folios l29r-160v. 5 Alain Lerond, Chansons attribuees au Chastelain de Couci (paris: Presses Universitaires de France, 1964), 24. 6 Alfred Jeanroy, ed., The Chansonnier d'Arras, 6-8. The identification of these works is based upon Jeanroy's introduction to the chansonnier; no evidence exists to suggest that his description is inaccurate. 3 Folio 32v-51v. This section begins with another rubric, "lei endroit definent li filosofe et li aucteur, si conmence apres le naissence de Jhesu Crist et se man". Folio 52r begins with, "Explicit li romans de Nostre Dame". On this folio, the second column and the verso are blank. Jeanroy identifies a lacuna here. Folio 53r contains a series of legends in prose as well as several miniatures. The legends are devoted to Saint Suzanne, Saint Julien, Saint Jerome, Saint Eloi, Saint Eustache, Saint Patrice, Saint Alexis and Saint Bernard. Folio l00v continues with the legends and ends at the bottom of the page with the rubric, "lei endroit definent li prologue et li enseignement de pluisors sains qui sont en paradis, si conmence apres conment li pelderes va querant Jhesu Crist pour ses pecies saner." Jeanroy identifies here a lacuna of about three pages.
