Location and Background Information The focus of this document includes the settlements of Bakenberg Basogadi, Bakenberg Kwanaite, Bakenberg Matlaba, Bakenberg Mautjana, Bakenberg Mmotong, Bakenberg Mothwathwase, Basterspad, Bohwidi, Buffelhoek, Claremont, Dikgokgopeng, Diphichi, Galakwenastroom, Ga-Masipa, Good Hope, Harmansdal, Jakkalskuil, Kabeane, Kaditshwene, Kgopeng, Kromkloof, Lesodi, Leyden, Lusaka Ngoru, Mabuladihlare 1, Makekeng, Malapila, Mamatlakala, Marulaneng, Matebeleng, Mphelelo, Nelly, Paulos, Pudiyakgopa, Raadslid, Ramosesane, Rantlakane, Sepharane, Skilpadskraal, Skrikfontein A, Skrikfontein B, Taolome, Van Wykspan, Vlakfontein, Vlakfontein 2, Wydhoek and Good Hope East The Mogalakwena Local Municipality forms part of the Waterberg District Municipality The Waterberg District Municipality comprises of six local municipalities namely Mogalakwena, Lephalale, Bela- Bela, Modimole, Thabazimbi and Mookgopong. The District municipality is bordered by Botswana on the West, and Capricorn and Sekhukhune on the eastern side [2]. Mogalakwena municipality has a population of about 320 000 of which approximately 70% live in rural villages. These villages are spread over a total surface area of 61 84 Km2 within the area of jurisdiction of the municipality. Majority of the water services to rural areas in the Mogalakwena Local Municipality are based on individual schemes having ground water as their main source of supply. They typically consist of one or a number of boreholes, a pumping system pumping ground water out of the individual boreholes into a distribution reservoir and from there water is gravitated through an internal reticulation into the street taps and some yard connections [2]. The Mogalakwena Local Municipality is undergoing extensive development due to the development of numerous mines in the Bushveld complex [2]. The Bakenberg cluster is situated in the central regions of the Mogalakwena Local Municipality within the A62F, A62C, A62B, A61G, A62A, and A61J quaternary catchments. The entire Bakenberg Cluster obtains its water supply from groundwater resources. Villages in the area receive their water from boreholes or collect water from rivers. A number of dams have been built in the Mogalakwena River to enable the villages to utilize the water for agricultural as well as domestic use. Although there are a large number of rivers in the X:\G\Proj 1\Proj\390778_DWAF North\7REPORTS\Strategies\All Strategies_19Dec2011\Limpopo\Waterberg DM\Mogalakwena LM\Bakenberg _2010 01 20.docx October 2010 i RECONCILIATION STRATEGY FOR BAKENBERG RWS REPORT NO. {1} study area, mismanagement of the water resources and unequal distribution of water rights has caused a scarcity of water. The supply of potable water (at minimum RDP standards) in 65% of the villages in the Bakenberg area for instance poses an urgent problem to the communities. These problems are articulated by the community as “insufficient supply”, “unpurified water”, “sources of water too far (rivers)”, and “pumped equipment not secure” [4] The Bakenberg cluster is located centrally within the Mogalakwena Local Municipality under the quaternary catchments of A62A, A62B, A62C, A62F and A61G. Confidence level of Information available for the study area The confidence level for the information in this area is medium as there is no data available post 2005. Priority rating for the development of a detailed reconciliation strategy This cluster is considered to have a Priority 4 (high) rating for the development of a detailed reconciliation strategy. The total abstraction reaches a value of 0.86 Million m3/a. This value is far below the requirement for the cluster of 2.486 Million m3/a. Water quality is of some what a problem in the Mogalakwena area. With high nitrates, fluorides, hardness and high dissolved salts being present in the water. Operational and maintenance problems within this cluster have caused the intermittent water supply to the cluster, thus water is not always available and water shortages are experienced. The Olifants River Water Resource Development Strategy (ORWRDP), which runs through the Bakenberg Cluster, may be utilized for the water augmentation to this cluster. Available volumes for this alternative are not available to date. (ii) Evaluate existing groundwater resources. (iii) Full Feasibility Study needs to be carried out to identify additional boreholes to augment water supply. (iv) Address the water quality in the area through a water quality management plan. Long term scheme (i) Monitoring and development of the Water Conservation and Water Demand Management strategy. (ii) Linking the water pipeline from the Flag Bosheillo Dam with distribution systems at Bakenberg (iii) Extend and link between the Mokopane cluster and the Bakenberg cluster, whereby resources can be jointly utilized.
