Tsunami Student Activities By Cindy L. Trewin and Gary B. Lewis Exercise 1 TIME AND TIDE Close observation and comparison of the tide charts is usually the only indication the National Tidal Facility has that a tsunami has reached the Australian coastline. On average a tsunami reaches our shores once every two years; fortunately most are too small to be noticed. On the next page is the tide chart record for Vardon Harbor. It is a 24-hour tidal record for Wednesday, July 27 and Thursday, July 28. The sea level, in meters has been recorded every 15 minutes. 1. Plot the information from the tide chart on the graph. Once you have plotted the tide information, answer the questions below. 2. Over a 24-hour period there are generally two high tides and two low tides. a. At what time is the first low tide? ____________________________________________ b. What time would you expect the next low tide? ________________________________ c. At what time is high tide? __________________________________________________ 3. How many waves are in the tsunami ‘wave train’?_____________________________________ 4. What is the ‘period’ (duration) of the tsunami? ____________________________________ (hrs) 5. How long after the first tsunami wave did the ‘main wave’ hit the coast? _______________(hrs) 6. Would a tsunami of this size have been destructive to Vardon Harbor? Give reasons. _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________ 7. This tsunami occurred during low tide. Predict the tide levels if it had occurred during high tide for the same period: a. Wave 1 _____m b. Wave 2 _____m c. A massive underwater eruption occurred on the side of Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii at 8:00 a.m. Australian Eastern Standard Time. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert for the entire Pacific Region. A tsunami of up to magnitude 4 can be expected. Many areas of Hawaii already experienced damage and loss of life. On the next page is a tsunami travel time chart for tsunamis created by the underwater eruption in Hawaii. The lines indicated how far one tsunami travels each hour. The distance between each line represents 60 minutes. 1. Using the tsunami travel time chart work out how long the tsunami will take to reach the following cities. Cities Travel Time a. Sydney, Australia 11.5 hours b. Los Angeles, USA c. Christchurch, New Zealand d. Antofagasta, Chili e. Adelaide, Australia 2. What will be the estimated time at each city (remember to take into consideration the different Australian time zones and daylight saving time if applicable)? Cities Estimated Time a. Sydney 7:30 p.m. b. Brisbane c. Hobart d. Adelaide e. Perth Copyright Geological Society of America. ISBN Number: 0-8137-7624-4 Page 4 Copyright Geological Society of America.
