JMIINTERNATIONAL FORUM FOR SUPPRESSED MUSIC President Sir Simon Rattle The International Forum for Suppressed Music [IFSM) was established in September 1999, by the Jewish Music Institute [JMI) at the School of Oriental and African Studies [SOAS) University of London, as a plat form to bring together all those working in the field of suppressed music. Its early focus is on composers who suffered under the Third Reich, though the IFSM is also a platform for examining music under other totalitarian regimes. IFSM Projects The International Forum for Suppressed Music has embarked on a number of projects, among them, to record the oral testimony of composers and musicians of the early part of the twentieth century in Central Europe, their families and friends. It is preparing to receive the archives of musicians of the peri od, establishing data bases of the repertoire, developing major enterprises in the study, reconstruction, performance and recording of this music, and publishing new scholarship as well as material not hither to available in English. In the year 2000 IFSM held an International Conference Thwarted Voices: Music Suppressed by the Third Reich at the University of London, focusing on the pupils of Franz Schreker, the most highly regarded composer and teacher in Vienna and Berlin in the 1920s. The establishment of this Forum, and the development of its work, is endeavouring to meet the needs of audiences, musicians, promoters and scholars the world over. IFSM Newsletter IFSM publishes a quarterly email Newsletter bringing information to 500 musicians, musicologists, writ ers, critics and festival organisers worldwide, of matters relating to suppressed music. To subscribe please email ifsmrajmi.org.uk with the subject line 'subscribe to newsletter'. The two published Newsletters are now available on the IFSM pages of the Jewish Music Institute website: www.jmi.org.uk/suppressedmusic. Many reconstruction projects are lined up and awaiting funding to set them in motion. If you would like to help, please telephone Michael Haas at IFSM 02078984308. When the Rabbi of the Melbourne Synagogue, who had earlier been the Rabbi at the Berlin Liberal Synagogue before it was burned down, played him his recordings of Krenek's Jonny spielt Auf and Max Brand's Maschinist Hopkins Barry immediately recognised them as the exciting popular hits that they once were and became passionate about the music of the inter war period in Weimar Germany. He was fascinated by scores he Michael Haas with Berthold Goldschmidt found in second-hand bookshops in Melbourne of music by Schreker, Zemlinsky, Korngold and many of the other composers Thwarted Voices: an introduction by Michael Haas featured today. As we look at the International Forum for Suppressed Music in its mission to bring beginning of the last century, we find a surge towards modernism, the music of these composers back to the concert halls and opera but in parallel, we find a slow organic development in a much less houses, from where it was so suddenly and brutally removed. In aggressive and confrontational idiom. Indeed, after the First World this way we may come to understand how twentieth-century War, Weimar Republic Germany became the capital of musical European music was developing until it was torn apart.
