News release: 1 July 2019 Council seeks views on its air quality action plan Please give your feedback on Lichfield District Council’s draft plan to reduce air pollution in two areas of the district between now and 2022. Air pollution has been shown to negatively impact on health, including contributing to the onset of heart disease and cancer. It affects the most vulnerable in society, such as children, the elderly and people with heart and lung conditions. Lichfield District Council’s draft air quality action plan outlines how we will work to reduce pollution in two ‘air quality management areas’. These are the designated areas that are unlikely to meet national air quality objectives. The plan aims to reduce nitrogen dioxide at Muckley Corner along the A5 and a section of the A38 between Streethay and Alrewas. It covers five areas of action, including: transport measures, leading by example, education, community and partnership, as well as statutory measures and air quality monitoring. Councillor Angela Lax, Cabinet Member for Legal & Regulatory Services, said: “We are committed to reducing the exposure of our residents to air pollution across the district, to improve their health and the natural environment. “In our air quality action plan, we explain what we as a district council can do to tackle air quality issues within our control. There are a large number of air quality policy areas that are outside of our influence, including roads in particular, that are managed by Highways England. However, we will continue to work with regional and central government on policies and issues. “I hope local residents will read through the plan. We want them to give us their thoughts on the proposed actions which we can take as a district council.” The air quality action plan can be downloaded at www.lichfielddc.gov.uk/aqap. Views can be sent by emailing [email protected] or in writing to Environmental Protection, Lichfield District Council, Frog Lane, Lichfield WS13 6YY. The consultation is running until 5pm on 7 August 2019.
