With an emphasis on improvisation, her inspiration came from the short but eloquent compositions by such jazz icons as Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. Combined with the excitement and drive of the modern “jazz standard”, Baum strives to compose “short stories” that set the tone for this unique instrumentation and top-flight group of musicians. Short Stories debuted in January, 2015, as part of Jazz Resolutions 2015 during the NYC APAP/Winter JazzFest, and was filmed by the French Network Mezzo/Kidem for broadcast. Performances have included NYC’s Jazz Gallery, Cornelia St. Cafe, St. Peter’s “Jazz on The Plaza” and tours in the US and Canada. Short Stories, with a core quartet and recurring guests creating a modular group and concept, features Andy Milne, Joe Martin and Jeff Hirshfield with rotating members harmonica wizard Gregoire Maret, guitarists Gilad Hekselman and Nir Felder, and saxophonist Ben Wendel. YARD BYARD: THE JAKI BYARD PROJECT ...exploring the music of pianist/bandleader/educator Jaki Byard (1922-1999) Yard Byard: The Jaki Byard Project features Jamie Baum - flutes, Adam Kolker - sax/clarinets, Jerome Harris - guitar, Essiet Essiet - bass and George Schuller - drums. These long-time friends and fellow New England Conservatory alumni teamed up in 2010 to pool several of former teacher Jaki Byard’s old charts, dust them off, and bring them back to life. This cooperative group’s highly anticipated CD, Inch By Inch on Gunther Schuller’s GM Recordings, came out in 2014 receiving four stars from DownBeat. Highlight performances include the Kennedy Center’s KC Jazz Club, Dizzy’s Jazz Club at Lincoln Center Jazz and the WPI Jaki Byard Symposium. The music was all Byard’s, played lovingly and a bit loosely...Most of the songs in the first set were fine examples of standard form gone just slightly haywire. The absence of a pianist in the group is good strategy... Nate Chinen NEW YORK TIMES THE JAMIE BAUM QUARTET/QUINTET In addition to her Septet+ and Short Stories bands, Baum has continually performed with her own Quartet (or Quintet) throughout her career as a jazz soloist using the traditional jazz format of horn player, piano, bass and drums. The music ranges from arrangements of classic and modern jazz tunes to originals, and depending on the particularly type of performance and venue size, Jamie will often add a fifth musician for the quintet. Recent performances include the 2016 Guimaraes Jazz Festival (Portugal), JazzMandu Festival (Nepal), Bogui (Madrid), Nova Jazz Cava (Spain), Pizza Express & Vortex (London), Blue Whale (LA), Torino Jazz Club (Italy), The Rex (Toronto), Birdland (NYC), etc.
