East Tennessee is not only blessed with gorgeous, rugged mountains that harbor wild rainbow, brown and brook trout, it is also home to numerous large tailwater fisheries that provide ample opportunities for trophy trout and smallmouth bass fishing. For those unfamiliar, a tailwater fishery is a river that is created by water release from a dam. Years ago, Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) dammed numerous rivers to create large reservoirs. For the purpose of flood control and power generation, water is consistently released through large turbines at the dam forming a river below. Because this water is drawn from deep inside the reservoir and barely affected by air temperatures above the water, temperatures are very consistent, approximately 50 degrees on average, which is ideal for trout. This means that whether a 90-degree summer day or a 30-degree winter day, water temperatures in a tailwater fishery will still remain in the neighborhood of 50 degrees. However, the farther down river from the dam, the more temperature fluctuations are seen in the water. Tailwater downriver temperatures depend on how frequently water is discharged from the dam and the depth of the reservoir.
