When Brooks asked him what he was doing, Wilder told him of an idea for a movie: what if the grandson of Dr. Frankenstein wanted nothing to do with the family whatsoever; what if he was ashamed of those wackos? Brooks thought about the idea and finally said – “That’s funny.” So little by little, every night, Brooks and Wilder would meet at the Bel Aire Hotel, and step-by-step, they constructed the screenplay called Young Frankenstein, a parody of the horror film genre, in which good sense and caution are thrown out the window and madness ensues. The movie Young Frankenstein starring Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, Madeline Kahn, and Teri Garr was one of the top-grossing films of 1974, and has been recognized by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 funniest movies of all time. In 2007, Mel Brooks turned his movie hit into a Broadway musical, just as he had done a few years prior with his musical The Producers. Everything that made the movie Young Frankenstein such a triumph in comedic history – the characters, the dialogue, the physical comedy – was transferred to the stage. Add musical tributes to the likes of Rodgers and Hammerstein and Kander and Ebb, dancing mad scientists and a show- stopping tap dance, and Young Frankenstein comes alive on the stage. It has been an honor to build this ‘creature’ over the last eight weeks, and Eight O’Clock Theatre, Inc. it would not have happened without the BOARD OF DIRECTORS EOT STAFF Judith Hall President Betsy Byrd Managing Director talents of amazing volunteers and staff John Toppe Vice President James Grenelle Asst.
