'y^Vsr.,C^ ' HIS UNIVERSITY was founded in 1842, by the Congregation of the Holy Cross, under the direction of Very Rev. E. S o r i n , and w as chartered by the Legislature of the State of Indiana in 1844, with power ® to confer all th e usual degrees. The College buildings are on an eminence near two small picturesque lakes o f pure spring water, in the midst of the fine and healthy farming region of the St. Joseph Valley. The College can easily be reached fro m all parts of the United States and Canada by means of three great trunk lines of railw ay —the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern, the Chicago and Lake H u ro n , and the Great Western and Michigan Central; the first two passing within a mile o f the College grounds, and the last connecting at Niles with the recently-built railway b e tw e e n that city and South Bend, which runs within a half mile of the Col lege. At the Michigan Southern railroad depot, South Bend, omnibuses or private conveyances can be obtained. The College grounds are extensive and well shaded, and contain ball-alleys, gymnasiums, etc., with abundant room for all gam es and athletic exercises. The buildings are new, having all been erected since the destruction of the old College by fire in April, 1879, and arc well adapted for the purposes which they serve. They are heated by steam, lighted by gas, supplied with hot and cold water, and all the other modern improvements and conve niences. Particular attention has been given to the subjects of ventilation and protection against fire, and in furnishing the various rooms of the University every effort has been made to secure the comfort and health of the inmates. The institution is capable of w UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME.
