We always ask, “What is important to you? What would you like to see improved in your community?” In 2007, our donors answered those questions loud and clear. They suggested more than $195 million in grants to the community—that’s $3.75 million each week! Grants were given to more than 3,600 different nonprofits ranging from arts organizations to colleges and universities, churches, synagogues and many other charitable organizations in Kansas City and beyond. Individual grants ranged from $25 to multi-million dollar investments. The Foundation also welcomed 189 new donors to our family of giving, the largest number of individuals, families and corporations to open funds in a single year. We are excited to see so many new donors actively giving back to the community and we will continue to involve even more people—of all races and ages and our entire metropolitan area, north, south, east and west—in the joy of making a difference. 2007 Greater Kansas City Community Foundation AT A GLANCE Assets ...................................................$1,118,860,724 Affiliated Trust Assets ............................ $64,863,296 Total ....................................................$1,183,724,020 Contributions ........................................$189,014,176 Total Grant Expenditures ......................$196,001,068 Operating Expenses ...................................$6,498,585 10 TYPE OF RECIPIENT ORGANIZATION GRANTS BY GEOGRAPHICAL REGION RECEIVING GRANTS 15% Public & Social Benefit $27,333,971 6% Missouri 5% Religion $11,406,944 $9,322,526 5% Community Improvement $8,994,276 5% Kansas 3% Civil Rights $10,029,682 $5,945,692 2% Health & Science $4,180,539 5% Other Services $8,407,934 23% Education 16% Philanthropy & Volunteerism $42,418,922 $29,375,078 19% United States 70% Kansas City Metropolitan Area 26% Arts & Culture $33,346,069 $127,647,829 $46,451,586 TOTAL GRANTS $182,430,524 TOTAL GRANTS $182,430,524 Kansas City Metropolitan Area includes Clay, Jackson, Johnson, Platte and Wyandotte counties. Sometimes donors ask the Community Foundation for advice about smart charitable investments—investments that can leverage the greatest good for the future of our region. The Community Foundation engages in community leadership work for precisely that reason. The Community Foundation’s leadership work is based on the priorities articulated in the 2001 “Citistates Report” and the “Time to Get It Right” reports issued in 2005 and 2007. One of those priorities is strengthening the region’s urban education pipeline to prepare all of our children for success. If this is something that also is important to you, we certainly invite you to join us in this effort. In the 30 years since the Community Foundation was established, our donors have given more than $1.25 billion in grants to the nonprofit community. To celebrate our 30th birthday, we are sharing 30 stories about people who have carved out a place in their lives and hearts for charitable giving. We are grateful to all of our donors for making a difference in the community in their own unique ways. Thank you for making Kansas City a better place. 17 FROM COAST TO COAST: Nationally, an estimated $4.1 billion was granted by community foundations in 2007. IN KANSAS CITY: Among the 650 community foundations nationwide, your community foundation ranked 3rd for dollars given to the community in 2007. 1978 SEVEN FOUNDERS WITH A VISION GREATER KANSAS CITY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FULFILLING DREAMS THROUGH CHARITABLE GIVING ur founders believed that philanthropy is the opportunityO and responsibility of everyone, not just a few.
