Dr. YSRHU e-News letter Fortnightly e.Newsletter of Dr.Y.S.R.Horticultural University Volume.V, Issue–11 Dr.YSRHU e-Newsletter 1st —15th June,2019 Fortnight Focus Events Education Research Extension General Events Best AICRP on Palms Award "The Best All India Coordinated Research Centre on Palms Award for the Year 2018-19" received by AICRP on Palms (Oil Palm), Horticultural Research Station, Vijayarai for the outstanding contribution in oil palm research from ICAR, New Delhi at XXVIII Annual Group Meeting of AICRP on Palms held at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore on 06.06.2019. Buyers & Sellers Meet for Export of Mangoes Sri. Chiranjiv Choudary, IFS, Vice-chancellor & Commissioner of Horticulture, Sri. Paban Kumar Bortakur, APEDA Chairman, Sri. Narayana Bharat Gupta, District Collector have participated as chief guests in ‘Buyers & Sellers Meet for Export of Mangoes’ at Tirupati on 15.06.2019 organized by Department of Horticulture, Andhra Pradesh and advised the farmers on various aspects in exporting mangoes. Dr. K.T.V.Ramana, Principal Scientist (Hort.) & Head, CRS, Tirupati, Dr. R. Nagaraju, Principal Scientist & Head, HRS, Anantharjupeta and Dr. L. Mukunda Lakshmi, Senior Scientist (Hort), CRS, Tirupati have participated and explained about special horticultural practices to produce export quality mangoes to the producers. Different varieties of mangoes produced at HRS, Anantharajupeta were displayed in the exhibition. Education Exposure Visits First year Horticulture Diploma students of Horticulture Polytechnic, Kalikiri visited M/s. Galla Foods Pvt. Ltd., and M/s. Global Farm Fresh Pvt. Ltd., Puthalapattu on 12.06.2018 on an exposure visit. An exposure visit to Sri Varsha Food Product Ltd, Renigunta was organized for 3rd year students of B.Sc (Hons.) Horticulture students on 14th & 15th June, 2019. Students got acquaintance with different steps involved in procurement of mangoes, ripening, grading, sorting, washing, peeling and stone removal, pulp refining, pasteurization, sterilization, cooling and packing of mango pulp. Dr. K. Swarajya Lakshmi, Professor (Hort.), Dr. M. Siva Prasad, Assoc. Professor (Hort.) and Dr. Lakshmi Prasanna, TA (Extension) of CoH, Anantharajupeta coordinated the visit. Dr.K.Usha Kumari, Assistant Professor along with third year B.Sc. (Hons.) Horticulture students of CoH, Venkataramannagudem visited the Seed Testing Laboratory at Tadepalligudem on 15.06.2019 as part of practical exposure for the course GPBR-3.8.2 (Seed certification and production of vegetable, tuber and spice crops). Students got exposure to various seed quality testing procedures. Research Of the 10 new cross combinations (NRCOP-1 to NRCOP-10) of oil palm (Elaeis quineensis jacq.) developed by ICAR-IIOPR, Pedavegi, established in square system (9×9 m) during 2007 at Horticultural Research Station, Vijayarai, NRCOP-4 was found to be horticulturally superior with high fresh fruit bunch yield (26.87 t/ha) and high mesocarp palm oil yield (5.70 t/ha). This superior cross combination, NRCOP-4 was identified for state release under the name Godavari Swarna for commercial cultivation in Andhra Pradesh. Extension Workshops On 01.06.2019, KVK, Venkataramannagudem conducted workshop on formation of FPOs on Beekeepers of West Godavari district in collaboration with Department of Horticulture, West Godavari dist. Dr.A.Sujatha, Dean of Student Affairs participated as chief guest and explained about the objectives of Integrated Beekeeping development Center (IBDC)/Center of Excellence on Beekeeping sanctioned by NBB Volume.V, Issue–11 Dr.YSRHU e-Newsletter 1st —15th June,2019 2 (National Bee Board). Five Directors and five promoters have been selected by the beekeepers of West Godavari District for formation of registered body for the FPO at the district level. A Workshop on ‘Management of Rugose Spiralling Whitefly’ to the extension functionaries of West Godavari District was conducted at KVK, Venkataramannagudem on 04.06.2019. Dr. R.V.S.K.Reddy, Director of Extension, Dr.J.Dilip Babu, Director of Research, Dr.YSRHU participated and explained about technolo- gies available for management of Rugose Spiralling Whitefly and various possible ways to control the spread of the pest. A joint plan of action for effective management of Rugose Spiralling Whitefly was finalized. Training Programmes Dr. B. Srinivasulu, Principal Scientist (Hort.) & Head and Dr. P. Deepthi, Scientist (Pl. Path.), HRS, Anantapuramu attended farmers training programme on ‘Chilli and Guava crops’ as resource persons at Nimagallu (V), Uravakonda (M) on 14.06.2019 and educated farmers on management aspects of Chilli crop. Later visited guava (Taiwan Guava) crop infested with nematodes. On 01.06.2018, KVK, Vonipenta conducted a training programme on “Importance of Soil and Water collection” at Krishnapuram village of Mydukur Mandal. Dr. V. Nagarjuna, Research Associate (SS & AC) and Sri. E. Ravi Goud, Research Associate (Extension), explained the importance and method of soil and water sample collection and also explained the interpretation of soil testing results for balanced fertilization in different crops. On 13.06.2016, KVK, Vonipenta conducted training programme on ‘Preparation of healthy summer drinks for school going children’ to learn a few recipes from locally available fruits. The scientist explained about banana milkshake, carrot juice, and leafy vegetable juices and demonstrated method of preparation for lemon squash and mango squash (pana). Smt.R.Suneetha, Research Associate, (Home Science) coordinated the programme. On 14.06.2016, KVK, Vonipenta conducted training programme on ‘Planning and layout of Nutri-gardens at house hold level’ by women farmers. Smt. R.Suneetha, Research Associate, (Home Science) explained the uses of nutri-gardens in different models like round, and square type with 3 & 5 layered and terrace gar- dening to landless farmers. Also explained anemia and its impact during adolescent age and remedies to overcome with consump- tion of jaggery based products and moringa leaf powder. Volume.V, Issue–11 Dr.YSRHU e-Newsletter 1st —15th June,2019 3 On 14.06.2019 Sri G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist (Pl. Path.) & Head and Dr V. Yugandhar Research Associate (Hort.), KVK, Vonipenta participated as technical resource persons in farmers training programme organized by M/s.Coromandel International Pvt. Ltd at G V Satram village of Mydukur mandal. Scientists explained about cultivation practices, bunch management techniques, fertilizer management through fertigation, pest and disease management. KVK, Venkataramannagudem conducted an awareness Programme on Financial Literacy as a part of observation of Financial Literacy Week from June 03.06.2019 to 07.06.2019 by RBI and explained about formal baking system and distributed leaflets related to banking schemes in Dibbagudem village. 06.06.2019, KVK, Venkataramannagudem conducted training programme on “Scientific management in Sheep and Goat” to the rural youth. After the training programme, ten units of Nellore Brown Sheep were provided to rural/tribal youth under Attracting and Retaining Youth in Agriculture (ARYA) project coordinated by Dr. T. Vijaya Nirmala, Scientist (Vet. Sc.). KVK, Venkataramannagudem conducted an off campus training programme on ‘Importance of soil sampling’ on 12.06.2019 at Gurugumilli village of Buttaigudem mandal. A total of 65 soil samples were collected from Ramachandrapuram, Dibbagudem, Pandirimamidigudem and Gurugumilli villages. Front Line Demonstrations KVK, Venkataramannagudem conducted an off campus training programme on ‘Integrated crop management practices in paddy’ on 12.06.2019 at Dibbagudem village of Jeelugumilli mandal. Later distributed paddy seed MTU 1156 (Tarangini) to tribal farmers under FLD. Dr. V. Deepthi, Scientist (Agri. Extn.) coordinated the programme. KVK, Venkataramannagudem provided vegetable seeds viz., okra, ridge gourd, bitter gourd to the tribal farmers of Busarajupalli and Mettugudem under TSP -Technical programs (FLDs) on 13.06.2019. Dr. K. Venkata Subbaiah, Scientist (Hort.) coordinated the programme. Volume.V, Issue–11 Dr.YSRHU e-Newsletter 1st —15th June,2019 4 Diagnostic Visits Dr. K. Ravindra Kumar, Scientist (Hort) and Sri. Ch. S. Kishore Kumar, Scientist (Pl. Path.), HRS, Kovvur conducted diagnostic survey for nematode infestation in guava in Pulidindi village of East Godavari district on 13.06.2019. On 07.06.2019, Dr. V. Yugandhar, Research Associate (Hort.), KVK, Vonipenta visited banana fields for diagnosis of pest and disease incidence at Mittamanu- palli village of Mydukur mandal. Observed sun burn in banana field and recommended to spray potassium sulphate @ 0.5 % on crop foliage for sustaining the hot conditions. On 11.6.2019 Sri G. Sandeep Naik, Scientist (Pl. Path) & Head and Sri E. Ravi Goud, Research Associate (Agril. Extn), KVK, Vonipenta visited guava fields for diagnosis of pest and disease incidence at Mallepalle village of B. Matham mandal. Observed the incidence of wilt disease in guava and suggested soil drenching with copper oxy chloride @ 0.3% followed by carbendazim @ 0.1%. On 10.06.2019, Dr.T. Vijaya Nirmala Scientist (Veterinary Science) KVK, Venkataramannagudem visited quail poultry farm at Tadepalligudem and observed bumble foot disease in quails and suggested cleaning of foot lesions with povidone iodine solution and also administration of enrofloxacin antibiotics(10 mg/Kg.B.wt) orally for three days.
