ATFS BULLETIN Association of Track and Field Statisticians 2/2018 - June 2018 PRESIDENT’S REPORT Dear All, The 2018 Annual has been published and mailed and should be in your possession shortly, if not already. Once again thanks to Jonas Hedman for doing all the mailing and of course to Peter Matthews for doing the hard work as he does each year. Thanks to all those who do contribute as well. We are very fortunate that the IAAF continue to purchase the bulk of the copies and we are very grateful to them. Work continues on the 1900 – 1920 project. We have had more people contributing with results from that era. It is time consuming for the continuous checking and dou- ble checking but our co-ordinator Tomas Magnusson continues to do a fantastic job. Work also continues on the 1940’s project by Richard Hymans and Pino Mappa. Please help if you have material to add. Thanks to those who responded to help with the world women’s rankings 1974 – 1978. Hopefully I can get started fairly soon as I gather material now that I have fin- ished work on the 2018 Commonwealth Games which went extremely well this year. Our secretary Michael plans on some updates to the website which he will expand upon. I have asked in the past and I will continue to do so. Could you please update your profiles and add a photo on our website. Winfried Kramer has published his National Athletic Records for all countries and he has also updated the finals results of recent World Championships and Olympic Games after a large number of drug suspensions. These lists are printed further on in this Bulletin. Some of our members are still doing a great job at the highest level and in particular Mark Butler whose comprehensive statistics books for World and Olympics are amazing as are his extended start lists at major International events. Another busy year of athletics is in progress. We have already had the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Great Britain, Commonwealth Games Gold Coast, Australia and World Walk Teams in Taicang, China. Currently the South American Games in Cochabamba, Bolivia are in progress. Coming up are the Mediterranean Games in Tarragona, Spain in June, the IAAF World Junior Champs in Tampere, Fin- land in July, the Central American & Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia in July, the African Championships in Assaba, Nigeria in August, the European Cham- pionships in Berlin, Germany in August, the Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia in August, the IAAF World Cup in Ostrava, Czech Republic in September and the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina in Oc- tober. These events are interspersed with the Diamond League and Grand Prix events. Lots to enjoy. ATFS Website Over the coming months I will be revamping our website to bring it in line with the latest website presentation developments. This update will be undertaken offline, so members will still have access to the current website. The URL will remain the same and members will not need to change their UserId or Password to continue to access the current or new website. And as our President has mentioned, all members are en- couraged to access the website and update their contact detail and other pertinent in- formation. Electronic Statistical References As noted in Paul Jenes report the 2018 Annual was published in book form, but for how long this format continues will no doubt be the center of discussions during the year ahead. It should be noted that the USATF has discontinued printing their informative yearbook and it is now only available online to finan- cial members only. Athletics Australia also has move dto have their statistical reference book online while a number of our statistical associates now only have their works available online. VALE – Dr David MARTIN Dr David Martin, an ATFS Member for more than 30 years, passed away on 28 Febru- ary 2018, after a decades-long battle with Parkinson's Disease. Dr Martin, a Regents Professor emeritus at Georgia State University, was internationally recognized for his interdisciplinary contributions to distance running. His professional activity as a coach, researcher, statistician and advocate provided him with a great breadth and depth of focus that enabled him to impact the sport in many ways. For almost two decades, Martin was simultaneously an active member of USA Track & Field (marathon development chair), the American Physiological Society, the In- ternational Society of Olympic Historians, the ATFS, the Track and Field Writers of America, the Association de la Presse Sportive (AIPS), the Association of Interna- tional Marathons (chief statistician) and the International Marathon Medical Directors Association (IMMDA). David authored five books [The Marathon Footrace (1979), The High Jump Book, (1987), Training Distance Runners (1991), The Olympic Marathon (2000), Better Training for Dis- tance Runners (1997)] and more than 100 articles related to athletics, exercise science and sports medicine. His expertise enabled scores of coaches and athletes to better understand the science of human athletic performance to improve training and racing strategies. His most coveted achievement was a research program he created for the 2004 Olym- pics that helped propel US marathoners Meb Keflezighi and Deena Kastor to silver and bronze medals. "Dr. Dave" will be remembered by his friends and colleagues for his wit, wisdom and modesty. His legacy will live on for marathoners who ask themselves, "Just how fast can I run?" Tom Casacky. VALE - Jon HENDERSHOTT July 20, 1946—April 09, 2018 It is with sadness that we record the passing of ATFS member and internationally rec- ognized track and field statistician, writer and competition announcer Jon Hender- shott. Jon died peacefully from complications of a stroke he suffered earlier this year. He was 71 years of age and a longtime member of our organization. Track and field was Jon’s life as he was born to be a part of the track and field fabric in not only the USA but across the world, no doubt influenced by his father who was a high school track coach in his home state or Oregon. After his family move to Seattle late in his pre-teen years the athletics bug bit Jon and from there his love of the sport blossomed. After becoming a sports writer on his high school newspaper he later graduated in journalism from San Jose State Universi- ty In the late ‘60s Jon became a working member of the Track and Field News magazine family. His interviews with athletes became must read articles whenever they ap- peared in TFN, resulting in many awards with him becoming president of the Track and Field Writers of America (TAFWA) complimented by his statistical research which was prominent within the ATFS. Jon authored two major books—Track’s Greatest Women and Ron Clarke Talks Track— amongst other works, with his writings bringing to life many athletes and their stories to athletics followers across the globe. THE FLYING FEET OF SIX JUMPING BROTHERS by: Ulf LAGERSTROM Part 2—Continued from February ATFS Bulletin 1903-1908 THE CON LEAHY YEARS Con began to take high jumping more seriously in 1902. He was rather late in coming around though he did 1.87 in 1900. He appeared to have given preference to the LJ and TJ, in which events he was world top class, especially in 1902. All the same, that year he took the HJ championship “double”, beating Pat, and got third at the AAA.
