Curtains Fell on the 24Th PSPB Inter Unit Chess Tournament Hosted by MRPL at Mangalore

Mangalore 3rd April. Sixth & Final Issue of E4, C5 Moments & Moves. No: of pages : 9 Curtains Fell on the 24th PSPB Inter Unit Chess Tournament hosted by MRPL at Mangalore. Vidit of ONGC emerged as the Best Player of the Tournament and also the winner of the Individual event, and BPCL-A Team clinched the Tournament Title for BPCL. 1 The morning session of the Tournament saw tense and long drawn battle of wits and moves. The match between GM Sasikiran K and GM Vidit Santosh Gujarati, both members of ONGC – A team was spellbinding at the end of which Vidit emerged winner. The Closing Ceremony started around 1115 hours with MD MRPL Shri P P Upadhya presiding. No: of pages :9 Sathyanarayana GM Instrumentation, MRPL & Chairman Organising Committee dignified the dais alongwith him. Shri Lakshminarayana recollected that when PSPB contacted MRPL to be host we had chosen Chess as 2 it is an indoor game and with all our constraints we hoped to do a good job of holding the Tournament. Shri Ravindranath, MRPL’s CVO and an The Winners of the Tourney : BPCL, with Guests of Honour ITS officer from GoI, was full of praise for the quality of the Tournament that he was following through news updates and the conduct of the programme. No: of pages : 9 The Arbiters Prof Anantharam and Shri Vijayaraghavan spoke appreciatively. The Open forum that followed, the chess participants poured generous praise on the host for the affection they received, the organizing, the food, the music by Shahne & Prahlad, the splendid singers of MRPL and Kudroli Ganesh’s magic show on 2nd April evening, the excellent arrangements, for E4 C5 and for the “thinking hats”. Captain of the ONGC Team IM Lanka Ravi recollected the last 3 Chess Tournament hosted by MRPL and pointed out that it was done very differently last time too. MRPL organizing committee gracefully accepted all the positive energy and appreciation and took a bow, but also pointed out that MRPL has been enriched several times over as the “Chess of Life” painting is a treasure with all the autographs of India’s best chess players besides all the wonderful moments of chess and good cheer, like celebrating Koneru Humpy’s birthday, celebrating Ugadi, listening to Adhiban, Lokeshwar Rao, Gopal G N sing at the magic event and the players donning the “muttalei”….so many adorable and engaging moments that happened in this Tournament that have become part of MRPL’s fabric. Interestingly, it was only the chess players who guessed this little monarch of chess shot with all the trophies he had earned at that age. IM Nisha Mohota of Oil India shared that she was tempted to write down “Parimarjan Negi” her contemporary and friend. GM Parimarjan Negi works for ONGC and is part of their A Team. While he was here for the Tournament, Pendyala Harikrishna 7 got the news that he has broken into the top 25 list of FIDE. Speaking to the media (INS) in Chennai while he was here at Mangalore, Harikrishna currently the second highest rated Indian chess player, with 2,726 elo points, after Anand, who has 2,785 elo points opined on Vishy Anand’s “ seconds choice” thus : “Changing his team of seconds will be entirely Anand’s decision. During last year’s title match if his team of seconds had delivered what he had wanted, then there might not have been be any reason for him (Anand) to change’. Mangalore 3rd April.
