Conclusion ……………………………………….. 205 4 Introduction Perhaps no other book in the Bible is more difficult to understand than the book of Revelation. Admittedly, many learned scholars can come to various conclusions or interpretations concerning the Book of Revelation and its meaning. Much of the difficulty has to do with the symbolism and futuristic visions contained in the book itself. For it is not written as simple historical narrative or didactic instruction. Some even hold the position that the book of Revelation has already been fulfilled. They are called “preterists”. The goal here is not so much to take a dogmatic position with the subject matter 5 discussed in this book, but to list and support the many indicators, correlations and evidence to support the conclusions arrived at. The focus of this book will generally revolve around the identification of four entities described in the book of Revelation. Namely, those four entities are the great harlot / mystery Babylon, the dragon, the beast from the abyss (or sea) and the beast from the earth (false prophet). Although the great harlot is not part of the unholy trinity, she does, we shall see, have significant interaction with it. For the dragon, beast from the abyss and the false prophet do represent the unholy trinity. Understanding who the great harlot is will be helpful in understanding the players that comprise this unholy trinity. In order to understand who, for example, will represent the beast from the abyss to come, it may be helpful to clearly eliminate those candidates that do not meet certain criteria. This may be viewed as a systematic way of ascertaining the identities of those entities which comprise the unholy trinity. For not only is it important to understand why certain positions are accurate, but 6 also why certain positions cannot be accurate or, at least, are at best inconclusive. It is also important to explain why popular opinion may not always necessarily be true or accurate. Popular or prevailing opinion is just that! Not only are these four entities separate or distinct, but they also do share some similarities. They will be shown to have certain areas or characteristics in common especially between the false prophet, beast from the abyss and the dragon. As already mentioned, these entities comprise the unholy trinity. Furthermore, both the Old Testament and New Testament will be used. Although the primary purpose of this book looks to the Book of Revelation as its guide, the Old Testament itself will be shown to have prophecies that apply to the end times. For just as not all prophecies have been fulfilled from the New Testament, the same can be said of the Old Testament as well. Indeed, some prophecies of the Old Testament complement or confirm the prophecies from the New Testament. 7 So let us now turn to discovering and understanding these four entities. We will start with the great harlot or mystery Babylon as she may not be part of the unholy trinity, but will be shown to play a major role with it and the end times or book of Revelation. Chapter 1 The Great Harlot / Mystery Babylon "Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and spoke with me, saying, “Come here, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters, 2 with whom the kings of the earth committed acts of immorality, and those who dwell on the earth were made drunk with the wine of her immorality.” 3 And he carried me away [a]in the Spirit into a wilderness; and I 8 saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast, full of blasphemous names, having seven heads and ten horns. 4 The woman was clothed in purple and scarlet, and [b]adorned with gold and precious [c]stones and pearls, having in her hand a gold cup full of abominations and of the unclean things of her immorality, 5 and on her forehead a name was written, a mystery, “BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.” 6 And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the [d]saints, and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus. When I saw her, I wondered [e]greatly. 7 And the angel said to me, “Why [f]do you wonder? I will tell you the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns." (Revelation 17: 1 - 7, NASB) In order to better understand the beast from the abyss, it would serve a useful purpose to better understand another "entity" in the Bible. This entity is referred to as the Great Harlot. So who or what is the Great Harlot? How would learning about the Great Harlot help in understanding the beast from the abyss? 9 How are the beast from the abyss and Great Harlot associated with each other if at all? Is the Great Harlot connected with prophecies? First, what does it mean that the great harlot sits on many waters? This great harlot (woman) sits on many waters in that she is located in many numerous places on earth. She is located almost everywhere on earth. This woman who sits on many waters is also given further detail in Revelation 17:15 " And he *said to me, “The waters which you saw where the harlot sits, are peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues" (NASB). So here we have further detail in that the waters represent peoples, multitudes, nations and tongues. In other words, the woman is a religious or spiritual entity that transcends different languages, nationalities, and continents. Is there a religion that fits this profile? The Roman Catholic Church fits this profile and has for many centuries. According to the website globalpost.com “1. The Catholic Church has around 1.2 billion members around the world, a 10 million men and women of the clergy and around 3,000 ecclesiastical divisions, according to the latest figures from the Vatican; 2) The increase in baptisms from 2009 to 2010 was particularly high in Africa with a rise of 6.14 million, followed by the Americas with 3.99 million and Europe with 894,000 more Catholics; 3) The number of Catholics per priest has increased to 2,900, also indicating a decline in vocations; 4) The only decrease in that proportion was in Asia; 5) The number of Catholic bishops meanwhile increased by 39 to reach a total of 5,104, while the number of priests increased by 1,643 to 412,236; 6) The number of male clergy who are not priests has increased to 54,665, while the number of nuns decreased to 721,935; 7) The number of lay missionaries around the world is 335,502, with an increase of 15,276; 8) The Church manages a total of 70,544 kindergartens, 92,847 primary schools and 43,591 secondary schools; 9) Charities run by the church include 5,305 hospitals including 1,694 in the Americas and 1,150 in Africa; 10) The Church also has 18,179 clinics including 5,762 in the Americas, 5,312 in Africa and 3,884 in 11 Asia; 11) It also manages 17,223 homes for old people, the terminally ill and the handicapped, most of them (8,021) in Europe and the Americas (5,650); 12) It also runs 9,882 orphanages -- a third of them in Asia. (http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/news/afp/130310/the- roman-catholic-church-facts-and-figures). Thus the Roman Catholic Church is located all over the world. It blankets many multitudes, languages, nations and continents. Second, what does it mean when the kings of the earth commit acts of immorality with the great harlot? And what do we make of the statement that those who dwell on the earth were made drunk with the wine of her immorality? When thinking of kings, we think of rulers of countries. Some kings rule benevolently and of course some kings rule less benevolently. Some kings are born to ascend to the throne because they were born into a certain family because their fathers were kings. Some kings take over the throne by force through war. At any rate, when we think of kings we think of government. We think of the 12 headship of a political system. On the other hand, the great harlot is that organized or spiritual or religious entity whom these kings commit immorality with. When the kings of the earth commit immorality, they are committing a spiritual immorality including for monetary and political gain. Both sides are scratching each other's backs so to speak.
