The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi (CWMG), published by the Publications Division, is a monumental document of Gandhiji's words as he spoke and wrote, day after day, year after year, beginning with the year 1884 till his assassination on January 30, 1948. In this series, his writings, scattered all over the world, have been collected and constructed with stringent academic discipline and with an ethical sense of loyalty. The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi (CWMG-original-KS-edition, called so, after Prof. K. Swaminathan, the chief architect of the original series) had taken about 38 years in the making. They are a series of 100 volumes, connected as an integrated whole. These volumes were published in the years 1956-1994. Soon after Gandhiji's assassination, persons of eminence with sense of commitment to Gandhiji's legacy founded the Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, New Delhi, to preserve and continue Gandhiji's legacy. They initiated an effort to collect Gandhiji's writings and publish them. To carry forward this task, the CWMG Advisory Board was specially set up in 1956, which consisted of the prominent Gandhian veterans and associates, fully acquainted with the life and works of Gandhiji as well as country's freedom movement. The Advisory Board delegated the editorial responsibility to a carefully chosen qualified team of editors, with proven ability and credentials, from across the country, and gave them direction and guidance for a period of two decades. Publications Division, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, undertook publishing of the 100 volumes with formal permission and support extended by the then members of the Navajivan Trust (the copyright holder of Gandhiji's writings). The editorial/research process of preserving and presenting this national heritage included: - Collecting Mahatma's writings spread all over the world - Decide their veracity - Organise that huge corpus in order - Record text from strictly verified documents - Render the non-English text in English - Place the matter in perspective - Bringing out volumes in chronological order The first Chief Editor of the CWMG was Shri Bharatan Kumarappa, followed by Shri Jairamdas Doulatram. Both were eminent Gandhian scholars. However, their respective tenures remained very short. The major work of the CWMG project was done under the leadership of Prof. K. Swaminathan, who became Chief Editor in 1960 and held office for more than 30 years to follow. The meticulous task of bringing out authenticated record of Mahatma Gandhi's collected writings was done with total loyalty, with well thought-out protocols and high academic standards. The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi - CWMG (English) was completed in the year 1994 and the corresponding edition in Hindi - Sampoorna Gandhi Vangmaya - was completed in 1998. In September, 2011, the Publications Division, with the approval of the Ministry of I&B, Govt. of India, entered into an MoU with Gujarat Vidyapith, Ahmedabad (University of holistic education founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920, and currently a Deemed University) for bringing out the electronic version of the CWMG-1956-1994 (e-CWMG). A Committee comprising of eminent Gandhian experts supervised this meticulously executed work and ensured its fidelity to the original version. Members of the Committee were: Prof. Sudarshan Iyengar, Former VC of Gujarat Vidyapith, Shri Tridip Suhrud, an eminent Gandhian scholar and Director, Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya, Sabarmati Ashram, and Ms Dina Patel, a committed worker for archiving Gandhian literature. A dedicated CWMG cell was constituted at Gujarat Vidyapith to ensure that the e-CWMG matched with the original edition, word by word, and retained the same volume structure, font structure, line structure, page structure and the visual look. Besides being available as a well-designed DVDs set, the e-CWMG is hosted on the Gandhi Heritage Portal, a comprehensive repository of authentic Gandhiana. The Portal is maintained by Sabarmati Ashram Preservation and Memorial Trust, Ahmedabad with the support of Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India. The portal hosts e-CWMG in a searchable PDF format to ensure easy and free accessibility of The Collected Works of the Mahatma Gandhi for people of the world. .
