This guide shows more than 1 ,000 stamps and has info on 1 ,000 more issued by countries from the former French Territory of Afars and the Issas (now Djibouti) to Zimbabwe. We'd have given it 4 chainrings except there's no color and the reproduction in this homemade-looking, spiral-bound guide is often poor. Still, for cycling philatelists (stamp collectors) it's practically a necessity. Reprinted from Bicycling Magazine, April, 1995, pg. 36. 2011 - Placed in the Public Domain by Steve Malone Thanks again to all those who contributed directly and indirectly to the first edition of this book. Without their initial help and support, this updated edition would not be possible. Special thanks are owed to a number of present and past Bicycle Stamps Club members whose keen eyes caught many (hopefully all) of my mistakes and omissions in the first edition. A few people have contributed anecdotal information that will make the book more interesting to many users. Others have given assistance in trying to correct confusing grammar. Their generous assistance in making this book more accurate and more useful for their fellow collectors is deeply appreciated. Specifically, Norman Batho, Ian Gray, Piet Hein Hilarides, Douglas Marchant, Takao Ono, Ron Sant, Bert Schapelhouman, Chuck & Sherry Schmidt, Marco Tibbe, and Rupert Waltl have made helpful contributions. Yet again, thanks are due to the Bicycle Stamps Club members, including many not named above, that have contributed information to past issues of Bicycle Stamps. When possible this information has been incorporated into this second edition. This magazine is an invaluable reference source and very nearly my sole source for updating this book. Illustrated Bikes on Stamps, 1 996 Edition INTRODUCTION This is the 201 1 release of this work into the public domain. This compilation is not warranted for accuracy or completeness. Every effort has been expended to include every known bicycle stamp. However, new discoveries are always popping up, so no list is ever truly complete. And mistakes are inevitable, so likewise, no list is ever perfect. The information presented herein has been checked extensively for accuracy. However, since the sources used often provide conflicting information, and quite often it is not possible to verify information directly with the postal authority concerned or by viewing an actual copy of the stamp in question, some inaccuracies are sure to exist. WHAT IS A "BICYCLE STAMP"? A bicycle-related postage stamp which depicts, or is strongly related to, cycling. For this book, bicycle-related includes; 13 Any portion of a bicycle, tricycle, unicycle, or other pedal powered vehicle or exercise bicycle. Symbols commonly associated with bicycles, the sport of bicycling, or bicycle use. The words bicycle, tricycle, or unicycle in any language, or their abbreviations, except when used to describe a motorized vehicle. Any stadium known to be used as a velodrome for a world class cycling event or labeled as a velodrome on the stamp. Persons commemorated as bicycle racers or for their connection to cycling. Stamp includes: Stamps issued by a national government for payment of postage. Savings and various tax stamps are not included. Postage stamps issued by localities or regional governments, provided that such postage was accepted for mail delivered outside said locality or region. All other "locals" are not included. Stamps meeting the above criteria that are imprinted on postal stationery. Every stamp is listed separately. Many, but by no means all, errors are listed as footnotes. Such errors include missing colors or perforations, color inversions, and notable plate flaws. Many of the stamps and sheets in this list are also available as proofs, essays, with "Specimen" or an equivalent overprint, as color separations, or in some other special format. In general such items are not listed or, in a few special cases, are listed as footnotes. POSTAL VALIDITY This checklist includes stamps regardless of postal validity (whether they were actually used as postage in the issuing country). For instance, some countries issue special sheets solely for the benefit of collectors which are never used to pay for actual postage. Where a country regularly issues many different varieties of stamps, or stamps with values that are unlikely to be used for any postal purpose, a note is added either under the country name or as a footnote to the individual stamp. The user is cautioned that some stamps in this checklist have been issued for uninhabited islands, and many stamps never reach the country that supposedly issued them. Often such schemes are concocted by stamp marketing firms with the cooperation of legitimate governments for the sole purpose of generating a lot of revenue with very little expense. The subject of postal validity is highly subjective and so I leave it to the reader to determine which stamps are worth collecting.
