Some use backpack sprayers for all of their herbicide applications. Often the most common use is to spray glyphsate (ie…Roundup) around the base of the vines. High pressure applications can result in smaller droplets that tend to drift more. The key to an effective glyphosate application is to spray the weeds and not the vine. This is much easier done when the backpack sprayer is set at a low application pressure. I find that a pressure of around 15 psi works best for me to control the application and reduce unwanted drift. Pressures above 20 psi can start to create fine particles that tend to drift more. 1 Using a pressure control valve or pressure regulator gauge placed between the pressurized tank and spray nozzle will allow the spray pressure to remain constant at a pre-set level despite the changing pressure in the tank. The pressure control valve also allows you to maintain a constant application rate. You will also find yourself not pumping up the pressure as often when you have a pressure control valve or gauge. Some backpack sprayers like this Solo made unit above can be purchased with an adjustable pressure control gauge. Pressure Control Valves help to reduce spray drift and control the application rate. Entries for the Illinois State Fair Amateur Wine Competition need to be in by June 15, 2012. The Amateur Competition will be held June 25-27 at the Workforce Careers Center at Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield, Illinois. Each wine entry shall consist of one 750 mL or two 375/500 mL bottles. There is no limit to the number of entries that may be submitted. A fee of $15 for each entry will be required. Checks should be made out to the Illinois Vintners and Grape Growers Association.
