BARWICK, Ian COLLECTION Architecture Museum, University of South Australia BARWICK, Ian James SERIES 386 BIOGRAPHY Ian Barwick was born in Melbourne in July of 1938 and moved to Adelaide in December of the following year. After finishing high school, and successfully completing an apprenticeship as a Fitter and Turner, Barwick went on to study Architecture at the University of Adelaide graduating in 1966. Some years and travels later, in 1994, Barwick returned to the United States to gain a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture at the University of Texas at Arlington. Moving to Sydney in 1966, Barwick began his career as an architect working for Allen, Jack and Cottier architects. In 1968, Barwick embarked on 6 months of travel around Southeast Asia and surrounding areas until finally settling down in London. Several years were spent working as an architect and land planner in London and New York, before returning home to Adelaide in 1972 where he worked as Senior Landscape Architect with Hassell and Partners. In 1974, Ian Barwick Associates was formed and continued for thirty five years working on small scale architecture and large scale landscape architecture. Barwick has acted as prime consultant on several notable projects including: the Angaston Main Street Management Plan in the Barossa Valley, the Whyalla foreshore development, the Playford Gardens in Elizabeth and the Waterfall Gully Precinct in Waterfull Gully. He has won several awards which include the AILA National Project Award, Civic Trust of SA Award and the NLIASA Landscape Industry Awards of Excellence and has had numerous articles published including several in Landscape Australia.
