This final volume emphasises once again the magnitude of the Games, providing detailed and graphical representations of key statistical information. Volume 5 encompasses 11 divisional and 25 functional areas, commencing with the Top 100 Games statistics and concluding with full workforce listings. The first section is Sport, providing an in-depth analysis into competitor entry numbers and sport popularity relating to gender, nation and continent variables. The Sport section also includes technical official data, medical data and a full medal breakdown. The complexity of the accreditation matrix is summarised in Section C with a breakdown of all accredited Games attendees, from athletes and team managers to broadcasters and observers from future bidding Host Cities. Key operational areas of the Games included transport, accommodation, security, catering and the athletes’ village. Section D provides information on the scope and scale of each functional area’s Games wide responsibility, from vehicle movements to the allocation of hotel accommodation. Widely commended by the media, a major factor in the success of the Games was the dedication and hard work of all those involved. Section E presents the growth of the Organising Committee and concludes with an-depth look at the number of paid, volunteer and contractual employees within each functional area and at each Games time venue. Public interest in the Manchester Commonwealth Games was most visibly demonstrated by the overwhelming demand for tickets. Immense public support and enthusiasm for the Games was generated by a strategic marketing campaign built up over many years. Section G graphically portrays the impressive ticket sales, the results of post Games studies showing the impact the Games had on the public’s perception of Manchester and the event, together with statistics on the awarding winning website which received over 200 million hits. A major logistical challenge included the procurement and delivery of items to their Games time location, from the smallest items of stationery to huge temporary structures. Rate card procurement formed a major part of this undertaking and Section H lists all rate card items and those furniture, fittings and equipment with a value less than £500. With an infrastructure comparable to that of a multi-national company, the Games time technology network serviced 28 venues, each fitted with the latest technology. This section tables all equipment and services provided to each venue, together with an analysis of the support calls received by the Technology Help Desk system which operated throughout the event. An integral part of the celebration of sport and the 2002 Commonwealth Games was the Spirit of Friendship Festival. This final section provides a comparison between each event strand and includes the Cultureshock programme statistics.
