Library/Archives/Finding Aid 3 University Events, 1891-present University Archives Eastern Connecticut State University SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE: This collection offers information on campus-wide events including presidential inaugurations, building dedications, commencement ceremonies, retirement receptions, and special guests. Materials include programs, invitations, flyers or other documents related to the event. This is an open collection which is updated semi-annually. SERIES DESCRIPTION: Series I – Anniversaries This series offers information about the commemoration of school longevity at the 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, 100th and 125th year celebrations. Items include programs, flyers, news clippings and congratulatory cards. Series II – Arts & Lectures* This series contains brochures, flyers, and information about the programs in the University’s Arts & Lecture Series which began in the fall of 2001. Special Guests include authors: John Updike, Maya Angelou and David McCullough; sports legend Bill Russell; TV personality Bill Nye “The Science Guy” and musician Pancho Sanchez. *Arts & Lectures programs were first offered through Student Activities in the 1980s. Information on these programs may be found in the Student Center-Activities collection in the Events series. Series III – Baccalaureate This series contains programs from the baccalaureate ceremony which takes place prior to graduation/commencement. These ceremonies have been held at the school since the 1950s. Series IV – Commencement This series contains information collected from commencement ceremonies dating back to 1891 and the first graduating class. The series includes programs, tickets and invitations. Series V - Conferences & Cultural This series contains a variety of programs including All College Conference, Onomastic Symposium, Latin American Awareness, Womens History Month, Life after Brown and Annual Research Conference and Exhibition. Series VI - Convocations This series contains information on programs for incoming freshman including “Make a Wish”. Series VII - Dedications & Naming Ceremonies This series contains information on ceremonies held to celebrate the opening of new buildings and honoring of individuals after which a room or building is named. Series VIII - Groundbreaking This series contains information on special ceremonies to begin new building projects on campus. Series X - Retirements & Receptions This series contains information about celebrations held in honor of retiring faculty, administrators or staff. Series XI - Special Events This series contains information about onetime special events offered to the college community. Series XII - University Hour This series contains information about special programs offered each year as “Eastern’s Wednesday afternoon cultural and educational series” featuring activists, authors, performers, musicians and ordinary people sharing extraordinary experiences.
