Pigot 1830 Callington

Extract from Pigot’s Directory of Cornwall, 1830 (pages 137 & 138) CALLINGTON Is a borough and market town, in the middle division of East hundred; 216 miles from London, 40 from Exeter, 12 from Launceston, and 9 from Liskeard and Tavistock. In point of situation or buildings, the town is not entitled to any admiration; the former being low and unpleasant, and the latter comprised in one broad street, running north and south. Callington is a member of the parish of South-hill, about two miles distant; and has a large chapel of ease within the precincts of the town, rebuilt at the sole expense of Nicholas de Asheton, Esq. in the year 1552; the chancel contains a fine monument to his memory: the curacy is at present enjoyed by the Rev. John Trefusis. The town is governed by a portrieve, annually chosen at the court leet of the lord of the manor; when all who have lived a year in the town are admitted free burgesses, and vote in the election of members of parliament; the portrieve is the returning officer; the present representatives are, Alexander Baring, and Matthias Attewood, Esqrs. Between this town and Launceston the country is pleasant, and the land well cultivated as any in Cornwall; but presents no object to excite the interest or notice of the traveller. The market-day is Wednesday; the fairs are, the first Wednesday in March, May 1st, September 19th, and November 12th; there are also cattle-markets on the first Wednesday in every month. The population of the borough and parish, by the census of 1821, was 1,321 persons. Post Office, Richard PETER, Post Master – letters from London, and all parts, arrive every morning at a quarter-past six, and are despatched every morning at half-past six.
