Princeton Review Selects CCNY As One of Nation's Best Colleges

Princeton Review Selects CCNY as One of Nation’s Best Colleges For the first time, The Princeton Review will add The City College of New York to its roster of the nation’s best colleges. The prestigious selection earns CCNY a place in The Princeton Review’s annual “Best Colleges” guidebook, The Best 377 Colleges: 2013 Edition, published this week. City College joins five other schools from across the country newly inducted into the guide. “Only about 15% of the four-year colleges in the nation are in this book,” said Robert Franek, senior vice president and publisher of The Princeton Review. “In our opinion, these are ‘the cream of the crop’ institutions for undergraduates in America." The announcement of City College’s inclusion in the Best Colleges guide comes just weeks after the news that the school rose 200 spots in the ranks of “Forbes” magazine’s list of “America’s Top Colleges.” Mr. Franek noted that the educational services company chooses exceptional undergraduate institutions based on several factors, in particular citing the selection committee’s “high regard for their academic programs and other offerings.” Institutional data and undergraduate students’ responses to surveys were also weighted heavily in the selection process. Message from CCNY President Lisa S. Coico Dear Alumni and Friends, The 2012-2013 academic year has gotten off to an exciting and productive start. We welcomed more than 1400 freshman this year, meeting our target, and our Macaulay honors class is the largest in our history with 88 highly qualified students joining us this September, up from just 40, two years ago. The incoming Class of 2016 had mean SAT scores 45 points higher than last year’s entering class. We also have grown the Presidents Community Scholars program, which I established just three years ago and we now have a total of 26 dynamic, accomplished and driven students from local high schools who had been recommended by their principals, advisors and teachers for such recognition. To meet the needs of our entire student body, we have added a total of 33 new faculty on board with the majority being women and underrepresented minorities. We also welcomed two new deans, Dr. Eric Weitz, the new Dean of Humanities and the Arts who comes to us with impeccable academic credentials from the University of Minnesota and Dr. Mary Erina Driscoll, our new Dean of Education who was most recently chair of the Department of Administration, Leadership and Technology at NYU. Also joining us is a new Chief Information Officer, our new Vice President of Information Technology, Praveen Panchal, who joins us from John Jay College. The flow of accolades and awards continues for the faculty as well. Award-winning filmmaker and City College MCA Department Adjunct Kavery Kaul has been awarded a 2012-2013 Fulbright Fellowship. Also of our distinguished MCA faculty, internationally acclaimed director, Chantal Akerman was featured at The New York Film Festival as it celebrated its 50th year. A student and faculty team from City College won top honors for their work in a National Park Service competition to reimagine America’s National Parks. Denise Hoffman-Brandt, director of the landscape architecture graduate program at CCNY’s Bernard and Anne Spitzer School of Architecture accepted the “Award of Excellence” along with colleagues from Rutgers University. On campus, inyourclass.com has been launched at five CUNY schools thanks to the efforts of Arber Rici and 2 other recent graduates of City College. During the summer, they completed the technology backbone of this academic social network while working at Stanford and with our support and CUNY’s assistance, the pilot program was launched in September.
