The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release April 1988 IN HONOR OF TOINY CASTELLI: DRAWINGS FROM THE TOINY, LEO, AND JEAN-CHRISTOPHE CASTELLI COLLECTION Through July 17, 1988 An exhibition of drawings from the personal collection of the well-known art dealers Toiny and Leo Castelli and their son Jean-Christophe is on view at The Museum of Modern Art through July 17, 1988. Organized by Bernice Rose, curator of drawings, IN HONOR OF TOINY CASTELLI: DRAWINGS FROM THE TOINY, LEO AND JEAN-CHRISTOPHE CASTELLI COLLECTION features thirty-nine works from the mid-fifties to the present by twelve major American artists. By the time of her death last year, Mrs. Castelli had formed a small and very beautiful collection that includes a highly personal selection of drawings by artists that have been represented by the Castelli Gallery. At the center of the collection are seventeen drawings by Jasper Johns representing the artist's work from the start of his career to the present, beginning with the Flag and Target drawings of the mid-fifties through two drawings for his landmark series of paintings, The Seasons (1986). The exhibition also Includes drawings by Dan Flavin, Ellsworth Kelly, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Morris, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenqulst, Ed Ruscha, Frank Stella, Cy Twombly, and Andy Warhol. "Collections can be likened to self-portraits of the people who formed them," writes Ms. Rose. "This exhibition of Toiny CastelU's collection 1s a tribute to the extraordinary perception of the woman who formed 1t." They are Roy Lichtenstein's Brushstroke (1966-68), now on tour with the Museum's exhibition THE DRAWINGS OF ROY LICHTENSTEIN, and Jasper Johns's Spring (1986). Also on view in the Ronald S. Lauder Galleries are two exhibitions drawn from the Museum's collection, RAUSCHENBERG, 34 DRAWINGS FOR DANTE'S INFERNO and a selection of fourteen additional drawings by Richard Artschwager, Claes Oldenburg, Jasper Johns, Ellsworth Kelly, and Andy Warhol.
