Arts Council of England Against the Grain - The Sapperton Group of Craftsmen Designers Dir Margaret Dickinson Cast Sheila Allen, Richard Campbell, Robin Canter, Elizabeth Routier, Clare Shanks 1983 / 52 min DOCUMENTARY The story of three architects, Ernest Gimson, Ernest Barnsley and Sidney Barnsley, who settled in Sapperton in the Cotswolds in the early 1890's. Inspired by the ideas of William Morris, they decided to leave the city for the countryside, hoping to find the setting for "a real revival of building and the handicrafts, free from commercialism and the monotony of machine production". They built and restored houses in local stone and designed and made simple furniture, and encouraged a modest revival of village life, but still found that their work depended initially on support from industrial concerns in Leicester and Birmingham. Includes interviews with relatives and friends of the Sapperton Group, among them Edward Barnsley, Donald Gimson, Miss Nancy Jewson and Major A. Biddulph. Looks at the company's history and the attitudes towards it expressed through reviews and news coverage of the time. Young dancers rehearse and perform `They came', a ballet about colonisation and exploitation. After 35 years a reunion of the original members of the company unlock memories that evoke the energy and excitement of the group. Basil Bunting Dir Peter Bell Cast Basil Bunting 1982 / 36 min DOCUMENTARY The poet Basil Bunting talks briefly about his long, autobiographical poem "Briggflats", published in 1968, and about the craft of poetry, but the majority of the film is devoted to his reading of extracts from the poem itself. The film also observes Bunting's daily routine, his return to Briggflats and the Quaker Meeting House, and shows the Northern landscapes so crucial to his work. Behind the Eye Dir John Davies 1991 / 52 min DOCUMENTARY Centred around the working experiences of three visually-impaired artists, Jennifer Maskel Packer, Jonathan Huxley and Mansel Griffith, the video examines how their different attitudes to vision have shaped their work. Most importantly it challenges the assumption that the ability to paint is defined by ability to see. Bridget Riley Dir David Thompson Cast David Thompson, Bridget Riley, Vicky Hawkins, Stephen Selwyn 1979 / 28 min DOCUMENTARY Covers a wide range of Bridget Riley's work from the earliest pointillist painting, through the black and white optical paintings which first made her reputation, to her later colour paintings. It shows her at work in her studio and demonstrates her method of work with her assistants. Carved in Ivory Dir Michael Gill Cast Kenneth Clark 1976 / 30 min DOCUMENTARY Examines the small ivory sculptures created by anonyomus masters of the years 700-1200 A.D. Much of their work decorates devotional objects such as croziers, crosses and caskets and their themes are mainly religious. Includes carvings from collections in Brunswick, Brussels, Copenhagen, Munich, Paris and New York besides a number from the Victoria and Albert and other museums in this country. Dread Beat and Blood Dir Franco Rosso Cast Linton Kwesi Johnson, Poet an' the Roots 1979 / col / 45 min BIOPIC A portrait of Linton Kwesi Johnson and the Brixton community where he lives and works as a poet- activist. The film inter-cuts poetry readings, recordings and interviews. The film contains footage of street riots and demonstrations, including one in Bradford where the crowd chant some of Johnson's verse. It also includes footage of Johnson at poetry readings and in the recording studio. Edward Burra Dir Peter K.
