NEW DEPUTY COMMANDER QUARANTINE! HOW to Cope?

SHAPE Community Life April 2020 SHAPE WELCOMES NORTH MACEDONIA NEW DEPUTY COMMANDER QUARANTINE! HOW TO COPe? EDITOR’s Letter Dear Shapians, Winds of change are blowing globally throughout our society in the last months, and they are changing our mindset and values. All media channels try to reinforce positivity instead of negativity, trying to get light from darkness, putting away any blues. Social networks are encouraging us: read books, watch films, cook more, talk with family, play board games, listen to music... There comes a time when the mind becomes saturated and we have to put a defense mechanism in place. Some pictures represent the ephemeral of our society, depicting our cities like in a post-apocalyptic film. But, like in any war, the key thing is to maintain a morale of victory, to remain calm and to be sure that, all together, we will be able to win. Our business code has to adapt to the new landscape: working from home, meetings online, duty travel reductions, etc. We will have to make sacrifices, we will have to adapt to new habits and new ways to interrelate with others, with family, friends, colleagues... And the most important thing: in the end, we will be better people, we will pay more attention to things we thought were not important, and, above all, we will win. Stay safe! By the way, a 30th NATO member, North Macedonia, has joined us in March 2020. Welcome! In December 2017, these shared traditions were inscribed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List. This list recognizes different oral and intangible traditions worldwide, aiming to draw attention to the importance of safeguarding such heritage. UNESCO considers these traditions an essential part of cultural diversity and creative expression. We at the library were excited to help highlight such traditions here at SHAPE. On March 1st, the Bulgarian Community celebrates Baba Marta (Баба Марта) pushing away the winter and welcoming Spring. They exchange martenitsi, which are small adornments made of red and white yarn. The Romanian Community celebrates Mărțișor and the beginning of spring. They also exchange small adornments, mărțișoare, made of red and white yarn. The Greek community celebrates Martis (Μαρτησ), which also features adornments of red and white yarn, bracelets worn until tied to the first flowering tree the wearer sees in March. We had over 500 people come to the library to help us celebrate! Romania, Bulgaria, and Greece had the most representation and brought decorations, shared food from their countries, and wore traditional clothes. Each country had informational displays, crafts, films, and music. A Passport Scavenger Hunt allowed the kids to explore the different countries and learn about their traditions. It was really a great experience for all. It was exciting to see the attendees discussing the similarities and differences between their traditions and getting to know each other. We all had the opportunity to learn about each other’s cultures, bringing us closer together. We at the library were intrigued by the idea of ‘one tradition, many cultures’ and the possibility of providing a space for open dialogue about our differences and similarities at SHAPE and it proved be a positive experience for all. www.shape2day.com SCL 3 COVID-19 shows the best spirit of solidarity By Borja Montes Toscano LAWFAS Content Manager ACO Office of Legal Affairs ince the outbreak of COVID-19 last December in China, the virus has spread throughout the Sworld and has caused lots of casualties, as well as basic activities disruption. Following the beginning of this unexpected situation, SHAPE has taken all available preventive measures to fight back the pandemic. To these efforts and in this difficult situation, many of the SHAPE LWRs are performing tasks on a voluntary basis to ensure the safety of Shapians in different establishments, like Carrefour and RIS. These two facilities are main suppliers for the entire SHAPE Community on- and off-camp. These LWRs are carpenters, electricians, gardeners, handymen or equipment suppliers who are also ensuring SHAPE basic services during the crisis. SHAPE LWRs´ voluntary tasks ensure the health of Shapians by cleaning trolleys, giving safety instructions in order to keep social distancing and personal hygiene as well as monitoring entry/exit of the shops. SHAPE LWRs are a brilliant example of dedication and commitment in these challenging times. Thank you, SHAPE LWRs! 4 SCL Shapian earns Eagle Scout during Shutdown By Virginia McCabe Jordan Duke was not letting the coronavirus restrictions hamper his path toward earning the coveted rank of Eagle Scout. ast week, Jordan participated Jordan, the son of Anna and Lin a virtual six-person Board of Jason Duke, started as a Cub Review with Scouting representatives Scout in 2011.
