Co., 1892. The company produced a number of special advertising decks around this time, for distilleries or brew- ing companies, based on the World’s Fair deck or their Midwinter International Exposition deck (mentioned, but not pictured in Part 1, February SNO, page 10). These were the first Columbian view cards printed and are therefore considered the first U.S. illustrated souvenir cards. One example from a set of ten Goldsmith Exposition Postal Cards, cancelled by a World’s Fair Station, Chicago machine cancel, dated September 4, 1893. Issue 39 - March 7, 2014 - StampNewsOnline.net 14 The Ultimate Columbian Collectible A cover with a complete set of Columbian stamps, 1¢ through $5.00 (Sc. 230-245) plus the 10¢ orange Columbian Special Delivery (Sc. E3), all affixed to a Columbian 10¢ slate brown entire (Sc. U351, the high value in the set, Sc. U348-U351), most tied by multiple strikes of “World’s Fair Sta. Chicago Ill. Oct. 30 11 AM 1893” exposition duplex datestamps, the Special Delivery stamp being tied by a World’s Fair Registered handstamp. The cover was addressed to Savannah Georgia and forwarded to Mexico City, Mexico. It was prepared by Philip M. Wolsieffer, a 19th Century stamp dealer, A.P.S. President and Hall of Famer, who also was associated with Mekeel’s Weekly at this time. Issue 39 - March 7, 2014 - StampNewsOnline.net 15 Trans-Mississippi Exposition Omaha, Nebraska, 1898 A cover with a “Trans- Mississippi/Exposition at Omaha/1898” large red three-line handstamp used as a corner card on a 2¢ entire cancelled by “Oma- ha Nebr. Oct. 9 7:30AM 96” duplex cancel, mailed two years before the opening of the Exposition. Another pre-expo cover, this one a “Trans-Missis- sippi International Exposi- tion, Omaha, June-Novem- ber 1898” illustrated cover produced by The Omaha Philatelist with a pair of 1¢ blue (Sc. 264) tied by “Omaha Nebr. Sta. A Nov. 14 1:30PM 97” duplex and used to Howe, Nebraska. A 1¢ Trans-Mississippi (Sc. 285) tied by an “Omaha, Neb. Jun. 1898” machine cancel to a Trans- Mississippi and International Exposition, 1898, Department of Publicity and Promotion" illustrated corner card cover; and a pass to the Exposition Grounds in Omaha with a green seal in the background. Issue 39 - March 7, 2014 - StampNewsOnline.net 16 A printed notice dated June 11, 1898 from the Office of the Third Assistant Postmaster General, Washington, D.C., with a table at the top listing each denomination, its design and color. The notice states, “The issue of these stamps began June 10th, and will cease December 31st, 1898” and details how postmasters can go about requisitioning the stamps. [Note: for a closer look at this notice, use your pdf magnifier tool.] Omaha Post Office Official Business envelope mailed to the Exposition station Issue 39 - March 7, 2014 - StampNewsOnline.net 17 The Trans-Mississippi Exposition took place while the Spanish-Ameri- can War was taking place. One of the more colorful Spanish-American War Patriotic covers, with a “Remember the Maine” theme, is seen here with a 1¢ Trans-Mississippi (Sc. 285) used with two 2¢ pink Type IV stamps (Sc. 279Bg), all tied by a “San Francisco Cala. Aug. 30 8-AM ’98” machine cancel. The stamps pay the 5¢ UPU rate to Copenhagen, Denmark. This spectacular cover to Munich, Germany, bears the complete, 1¢-$2.00 set (Sc. 285-293) tied by “Madison Square Branch” registry ovals, also with a purple “Registered, Jul. 18, 1898 Madison Square Branch, New York P.O.” five- line boxed datestamp on the back of the cover. Issue 39 - March 7, 2014 - StampNewsOnline.net 18 Pan-American Exposition Buffalo, N.Y. 1901 A 2¢ Pan-Am (Sc. 295) tied by a purple “Pan-Am. Sta. Buf- falo N.Y. Aug. 22, 1901” exposition circular datestamp on multicolored exposition cover to Clyde, Ohio. An illustrated cover with a 1¢ single, Sc. 294, tied by a “Buffalo N.Y. Oct. 30 1901, Station C” flag machine cancel. Issue 39 - March 7, 2014 - StampNewsOnline.net 19 A 2¢ Pan-Am (Sc. 295) tied by a “Buffalo, N.Y. May 1 ’01 10:30-PM” First Day Exposition machine cancel on an illustrated hotel corner card cover to Baraboo, Wisconsin. The hotel design has a note “Fire Proof”, which was a selling point at this time when hotel fires were rampant and usually resulted in a great loss of life. Five different Pan-Am Expo promotional labels on the back of a cover, in this particular case, on the face, not shown, bearing the 2¢ Pan-Am (Sc. 295) tied by a “Buffalo N.Y. May 1 1901” First Day machine cancel. Issue 39 - March 7, 2014 - StampNewsOnline.net 20 A rare used Post Office card bearing a cancel from the Pan-Am Expo. An unaddressed hand-back souvenir cover with a large portrait of President William McKinley, can- celled Sept. 7, 1901, one day after he was shot while attending the Expo. McKinley succumbed to infections from his wound and died on September 14 while still in Buffalo. Issue 39 - March 7, 2014 - StampNewsOnline.net 21 Louisiana Purchase Exposition (St. Louis World’s Fair), 1904 Top to bottom, a multi-col- ored cover promoting the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, sent from St. Louis to Germany, postmarked September 20, 1903; a street scene at the Fair; and a cover with a similar scene, without the crowds, showing the Machinery Building. Issue 39 - March 7, 2014 - StampNewsOnline.net 23 A Registered cover with a “Jul. 4, 1904/Exposition Sta- tion/St. Louis, Mo.” violet four line Expo handstamp on a cover franked with the 1904 1¢-10¢ Louisiana Purchase complete set tied by an Expo Station Duplex Numeral “1” cancel, the cover bearing a “California Louisiana Exposi- tion Commission” corner card. This is the earliest known usage of the stamps, and one of only five covers recorded with a complete Louisiana Purchase set and this rare registry marking. Issue 39 - March 7, 2014 - StampNewsOnline.net 24 Lewis & Clark Exposition Portland, Oregon, 1904 2¢ Sc. 319 tied to multicolored 1905 Lewis & Clark Centen- nial/Portland, Oregon illustrated cover by a “Portland, Ore./Oct 21, 1904” World's Fair slogan promotional postmark. The Expo ran from June 1 to October 15, 1905, not in 1904 as the Stamp Specialist article stated. “Official Mailing Card” showing the entrance to the Expo. Issue 39 - March 7, 2014 - StampNewsOnline.net 25 Jamestown Tercentenary Exposition Hampton Roads, Va., 1907 1¢ Jamestown (Sc. 328) pair, tied by “Norfolk Va. Exposition Sta. Nov. 6, 1907” duplex cancel on oversize multicolored Jamestown Exposition fairgrounds souvenir card to Washington D.C. 1¢ Jamestown (Sc. 328) tied by “Norfolk Va. Apr. 25 10-AM 1907” pre-First Day exposition machine cancel on souvenir card to Rochester N.Y., second strike of cancel at lower left. This is the only recorded pre-FD use of the Jamestown issue (Sc. 328-330). The Jamestown Exposition was held from April 26 to December 1, 1907 in Norfolk Va., to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown. The stamps were officially issued on April 26. Issue 39 - March 7, 2014 - StampNewsOnline.net 26 A complete set of the 1¢, 2¢ and 5¢ Jamestown issue (Sc. 328-330) used on a 2¢ entire to Springfield Mass., tied by handstamps, also with a “Norfolk (Exposition Sta.) Va. Registered May 10, 1907” double- circle datestamp. The earliest date of use of the complete set on cover, and of the 5¢ stamp, is May 8, 1907. A Keystone View Company Stereo View, “The Life- Saving Corps - Jamestown Ex- position, James- tonw, Va.” with a descriptive card that states, “Unless you live along the sea- shore or have made a voyage you cannot fully understand the work that these men are doing”, describes a life-saving operation and concludes “The United States is the only country in the world that has a life-saving service run by the government.…” Issue 39 - March 7, 2014 - StampNewsOnline.net 27 A picture post card to Indiana show- ing the Army and Navy Club, with a 2¢ Sc.
