LADB Article Id: 059970 ISSN: 1060-4189 Chile: Opinion Poll On Political Preferences by Erika Harding Category/Department: General Published: Tuesday, August 18, 1992 On Aug. 9, results of a public opinion poll conducted by the Gemines Institute and Santiago daily newspaper La Tercera were released. About 62.6% of those polled said they support President Patricio Aylwin, while 22% said they oppose him. The poll indicated that Aylwin's greatest support is among the middle class, where he achieved a 70.8% approval rating, compared to 67.5% among the lower class and 43.5% among the wealthy. About 24.4% of respondents identified themselves as supporters of the Christian Democratic Party (Partido Democrata Cristiano-PDC), 9.8% of the Independent Democratic Union (Union Democrata Independiente-UDI), 7.7% of the Socialist Party (Partido Socialista-PS) and 6.5% of the Party for Democracy (Partido por la Democracia-PPD). When questioned regarding preferences for the 1993 presidential elections, 22.8% of respondents indicated they currently support PDC member Eduardo Frei Ruiz Tagle, compared to 14.2% for PS representative Ricardo Lagos, 6.5% for Centrist Union (Union Centro-Centro-UCC) founder Francisco Javier Errazuriz, and 4.5% and 3.3%, respectively, for rightist candidates Evelyn Matthei and Hernan Buchi.
