France played a pivotal role in the emergence of water gardening, thanks to two colorful Belle Époque icons: Latour-Marliac’s new waterlily hybrids and Claude Monet’s Impressionist paintings. Join us in France this summer to learn about these intertwined stories while standing on the Japanese bridge over Monet’s famous lily pond, and while strolling among the 150-year-old cultivation pools at Latour-Marliac, the nursery that put waterlilies on the map in the late nineteenth century. Meet and hear from the breeders, nursery owners, collectors, historians and aficionados who are ensuring that this tradition of horticultural innovation remains alive and well today. Along the way, tour exceptional gardens, sample some of the best of French cuisine, and taste Bordeaux’s finest wines at the vineyards where they are produced. Read on for more about what’s in store... 2019 SYMPOSIUM THEME: “CONSERVATION, BREEDING, CULTURE AND DIFFUSION OF AQUATIC PLANTS IN THE 21ST CENTURY: A GLOBAL BOTANICAL AND HORTICULTURAL HERITAGE.” PRE-SYMPOSIUM DAY 1 IN PARIS - AUGUST 21 ARRIVE IN PARIS, SEE THE SIGHTS, HOTEL STAY IN THE MONTPARNASSE AREA PRE-SYMPOSIUM DAY 2 IN PARIS - AUGUST 22 VISIT MONET’S NYMPHÉAS PANELS AT THE ORANGERIE MUSEUM PARIS PRE-SYMPOSIUM DAY 2 IN GIVERNY - AUGUST 22 Caroline Holmes is a British garden historian, consul- tant, author and lecturer who spe- cializes in 19th cen- tury plantsmanship, horticulture and landscape design. Trained as a plant pathologist, he is currently Director of the Water Lily Institute at Rajamangala University and chairman of the Thailand Network for Lotus and Water lily Research and Development. Among his many award-winning hybrids are N. ‘Mangkala Ubol’ and N. ‘Wanvisa’. He was inducted into the IWGS Hall of Fame in 2018. Florian Henaux lives in France and has become a regular award-winner in IWGS waterlily competitions for his stunning hardy and intersubgeneric hybrids. Passionate about water lilies from a young age he turned his attention to hybridization and began producing original crosses in a remarkably short period of time. Thierry Huau, based in Giverny and Paris, is a noted French landscape architect, urban planner, curator and specialist in large-scale cultural development initiatives. A few of his past projects include Disneyland Paris’ Villages Nature, the park Terra Botanica in Angers, and the creation of the concept store La Capucine in Giverny. One of his current projects, ‘Giverny of the South’ is built around Le Temple-sur-Lot. Carlos Magdalena lives in London where he is Senior Tropical Horticulturalist at Kew Gardens. He is an intrepid plant hunter, gifted hybridizer and author, having published in 2017 his book The Plant Messiah: Adventures in Search of the World’s Rarest Species. Particularly notable has been his role in saving from extinction the world’s smallest water lily, Nymphaea thermarum (pictured). Rich Sacher, co-owner of American Aquatic Gardens in New Orleans, Louisiana, has been growing tropical water lilies for sixty years. He is a founding member of the IWGS, a 2006 Hall of Fame inductee, and has been hybridizing tropical lilies for the past 20 years. His N. ‘Betty Lou’ is the result of his more recent work with Australian lilies, focused on creating smaller Aussie hybrids which are easier to grow.
