HAIRSPRAY Is Presented Through Music Theatre International (MTI) We Just Can't Stop the Beat! Director's Note

March 1-5, 2011 Decker Auditorium Based upon the New Line Cinema FILM written and directed by John Waters Book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan special arrangement with Music by Marc Shaiman - Lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman HAIRSPRAY is presented through Music Theatre International (MTI) We just can't stop the beat! Director's Note We are so thrilled with our choice of musical this year and how beautifully it fits our student talent. Most people who have heard of Hairspray think first of upbeat music, fun period dancing, engaging leading characters and colorful costumes. There is something so satisfying about a story line which features an atypical, heavier leading lady who wins the heart of the heart-throb. The message of looking beyond the shallow surface of beauty is a powerful and timely one. What drew me to the musical when I first saw it on Broadway, however, was a theme even more intricate to the fabric of our culture and our heritage—the struggle for equality. What many might not realize about this show is that its core message is of acceptance and integration. Set in the sixties, Hairspray has incredibly powerful production numbers which feature a strong African American/Black presence. Our nation needs to never forget the injustices done to people of this land—and we need consistent reminders to push us forward on this quest. This musical delivers on that message. Rest assured that you will be moved not only in spirit, but in body as well! Our hope is that you will leave dancing in the aisles—literally. So, thank you for supporting us so faithfully over the years—welcome to another journey with us on the Iowa Central stage. I am confident that you will exit our theatre space energized, enriched and excited to return yet again. Teresa Jackson Hey!
