Appendix 8. Threatened and Significant Plant Species on the Tiwi Islands

Appendix 8. Threatened and significant plant species on the Tiwi Islands Previous studies have discussed the status and distribution of plant species of conservation significance across the Tiwi Islands (e.g. Woinarski et. al, 2000; Woinarski et. al, 2003; Liddle & Elliott, 2008). Of the approximately 1 480 plant taxa recorded from the Tiwi-Coburg Bioregion, 11 are thought to be endemic to the Islands, and a further 17 species are known in the NT only from the Islands, with 2 of these representing the only known Australian occurrence of the taxa (Table 8-3). Nineteen Tiwi plant species are listed as threatened within the Northern Territory (Territory Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act) and six of these are listed as nationally threatened (Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act) (Table 8-1). Table 8-1. Threatened plants recorded from the Tiwi Islands, listed under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBCA) and/or Territory Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act (TPWCA). For TPWCA status, (e) denotes endemic to the Tiwi Islands; and (d) denotes highly disjunct species with the entire NT population restricted to the Tiwi Islands. Status codes: CR=critically endangered; EN=endangered; V=vulnerable. Scientific Name Family TPWCA EPBCA Habitat sp.
