1 UNIV ONLINE CATALOGUES UC:P400 PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM OF ALAN HERBERT FYFFE (MATR. 1903) Alan Herbert Fyffe came up to University College in 1903, having been educated at Winchester. His father Charles had been a Fellow here from 1875–92. Fyffe’s academic career was not very successful (he left with a Pass Degree), but he made a lively and full contribution to College and University life. He rowed for the College, played cricket at University level, and received a Blue in Athletics, but he also joined the College’s literary societies, and even took part in an OUDS production. During the First World War, Fyffe served as a Lieutenant in the Royal Garrison Artillery. He died in 1939. This album was presented to the College by his granddaughter Angela Treves (née Fyffe) in February 2021 as Accession No. 1492. As with other albums of this kind, this album contains photographs taken by professional photographers which Fyffe had selected for inclusion in it. It stands out among similar student albums of this period in the College’s archives because of the great variety of Fyffe’s outside interests which are all represented here. Fyffe also provided the names of many of the sitters in his album. There are just over 200 names given, one-third of whom are members of University College. Because of the great number of names (and Fyffe’s occasional inaccuracies in transcribing them, especially of people not attached to University College), an index, giving sitters’ full names, and College or institutional affiliations, where known, is given at the end of this catalogue. Catalogued in March 2021.
