VIII. PHILLIMORB'S PARISH REGISTER SERIES. VOL. CLXXVII (BOCKS., VOL. \ 1 1 J >. One hundred and fijty printed. Buckinghamshire Parish Registers marriages. Edited by W. P. W. PHILLIMORE, M.A., B.C.L., AND THOMAS GURNEY. VOL. VIII. ft ^L / ^foJ it o i! ti 11 u : Issued to the Subscribers by Phillimore & Co., Ltd., 124, Chancery Lane. 1912. — PREFACE This volume, the eighth of our series of extant Bucking- hamshire Registers, contains the Marriage Registers of Iver and Chesham, which have been transcribed by Mr. Thomas Gurney. As regards Chesham, it completes the marriage entries of the volume of Chesham Registers printed in 1904 by Mr. Garrett-Pegge. 1379052 It has not been thought needful to print the entries verbatim. They are reduced to a common form, and the following con- tractions have been freely used : w. = widower or widow. p. = of the parish of. s. = spinster, single woman, or co. = in the county of. son. dioc. = in the diocese of. b. = bachelor or single man. lie. — marriage licence, d. = daughter. publ. = publication of intended surr. = surrogate. marriage. It may be well to remind the reader that these printed abstracts of the registers are not legal "evidence." Certified extracts must still be obtained when evidence of a marriage is required for proving a pedigree in a court of law or when registering it at Heralds' College. For such certificates, appli- cation must be made to the local clergy. It is a matter for regret that this series does not receive a larger measure of support in this county. Its production involves much labour and expense, and the only encouragement accruing to those responsible for it is the knowledge that it fulfils a very important part in the preservation of our national records. The volumes are of permanent value and cannot be superseded. To the genealogist, the Marriages are by far the most valuable part of a Parish Register, whilst forming only about one-ninth of the total number of entries. — The advantage of an index is fully appreciated by the editors, but the most urgent work at the moment is that of printing as many Registers as possible, and thereby saving their contents, in the only effectual way, from all risk of loss, whether by fire, theft, decay, or accident. It will be more advantageous to have a general index for the county rather than a number of separate ones for the various parishes. Registers of the following forty-five Buckinghamshire parishes have appeared in previous volumes of this series : Amersham Contents. Parish. Years. Page. Iver ... ... ... 1605-18 1 2 ... 1 Chesham ... ... ... 1637-1837 ... 33 Buckinghamshire parish Registers. Marriages at Iver, 1605 tO l8l 2.
