Hull's Municipal Charities had been subject to controversy and in 1879 the Charity Commissioners held an inquiry into the alleged abuses. The result was that in 1881, the Corporation of Hull lost control of them and passed their managemnt to the trustees. The Hedon Samaritan Society was orginally founded as The Union Friendly Society in 1799 and dissolved in 1897. The Albert Benefit Building Society seems to have been a Hull based society, founded on 26 May 1860. Founded in London in 1696, The Hand in Hand Fire and Life Insurance was a mutual society and forerunner of the modern co-operative system. Description: Series of pamphlets. Related material: Papers for other local charities, friendly and building societies may be found within the C DMC, C DMM, C DMT, C DS and C DXX collections. David Neave wrote a background history 'East Riding Friendly Societies ', East Yorkshire Local History Society series, no.41 (1988). Other notes by Temple on the charities can be found at C DMX/5. Rules for Friendly Societies also had to be submitted to the Quarter Sessions and records for the Hull socities can be found under C CQR and c CQB, (Section III).
