Whiplash Your Job: Break down the narrative structure of the film Whiplash. You will diagram this, but first, a good way to think about it is as the director said, a movie has a thesis, so you might want to start thinking about it like an outline: I. (or Act I) - Hook (and estb. world of film/characters) - Inciting Incident - Plot Point/Turning Point into Act II II. (Act II) - Obstacles - (B-story) - Midpoint (or Turning point) - Obstacles, more obstacles - Climax of Act II (goal is in greatest jeopardy) III. (Act III) - Climax into resolution (dénouement) Note: This isn’t usually an easy task and not all narrative structures (even ones that are pretty straight-forward three-act story structures) come out as a nice orderly outline or diagram. Additionally, even though you are all diagramming the same film, your results will all look a little different. Use the resources below to get a better idea of how to find the plot points and how to begin deciding how to break-up the acts.
