Genetron® 11 Product Stewardship Summary July 2009 CCl3F Chemical Name: Trichlorofluoromethane Chemical Category (if applicable): Halogenated Chlorofluorocarbon Synonyms: Trichloromonofluoromethane; Fluorotrichloromethane; Fluorocarbon 11; Methane, fluorotrichloro-; Monofluorotrichloromethane; Fluorochloroform; R-11: Freon® 11; Halon® 11; Propellant 11; Refrigerant 11 CAS Number: 75-69-4 CAS Name: Trichlorofluoromethane EC (EINECS) Number: 200-892-3 Other identifier (Please specify): GPS0028 V1.0 • GENETRON® 11 (CFC-11) is an inexpensive and effective refrigerant used to maintain low temperature in refrigeration equipment, typically centrifugal chillers. • Because of their effect on the ozone layer, chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) products, such as GENETRON 11, are no longer manufactured but are still used in a variety of systems, and service refrigerant is sometimes still available in reclaimed form in some developed countries including the United States. In countries operating under "Article 5" provisions of the Montreal protocol agreement, CFCs in virgin form are still available, although these countries are now beginning to implement CFC phase-outs. The recommended replacement for CFC-11 is usually R-245fa or R-123. Honeywell encourages all companies who continue to operate CFC-based equipment to consider retrofitting to one of our many non-ozone depleting products. • CFC-11 is used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems, thus it will eventually be emitted into the atmosphere due to system leaks or when refrigeration equipment is disposed of at the end of its useful life. In the workplace, CFC-11 is used in closed-systems, thus significant exposures to workers is unlikely. Workplace exposure limits have been established. Please see the MSDS for additional information. Consumer exposure is not expected because CFC-11 is not used in consumer products. • CFC-11 is a colorless, volatile nonflammable liquid at temperatures below 23.8° C and has a characteristic ether-like odor. • CFC-11 is practically non-toxic. Short-term exposure to high levels of CFC-11 can induce cardiac sensitization and therefore it should be used in accordance with recommended practices. This product stewardship summary is intended to give general information about the chemical or categories of chemicals addressed. It is not intended to provide an in-depth discussion of all health and safety information. Additional information on the chemical is available through the applicable Material Safety Data Sheet which should be consulted before use of the chemical. The product stewardship summary does not supplant or replace required regulatory and/or legal communication documents. Statements concerning use of our products are made without warranty that any such use is free of patent infringement and are not recommendations to infringe any patent. • CFC-11 does not interfere with the ability to successfully reproduce and it does not cause birth defects. • The cancer risk for CFC-11 is low. • CFC-11 does not accumulate in the bodies of humans or animals. • Although not readily biodegradable, CFC-11 is unlikely to impact the aquatic environment because of its high volatility, low water solubility, and predicted low toxicity to aquatic organisms. It will migrate almost exclusively to the atmosphere where it is very stable and accumulates to contribute to depletion of the ozone layer. • Please contact us for more information.
