
KATHMANDU UNIVERSITY School of Medical Sciences General Information Kathmandu University is an independent, not-for-profit, non-government institution. It is an institution of higher learning dedicated to maintain high standards of academic excellence. Kathmandu University was established by the Act of Parliament on November 1991. It started functioning from December 11, 1991. MISSION The Kathmandu University has the mission to: • promote all-around development of students’ abilities personalities, • develop an awareness of the role of science and its application in the understanding of problems of contemporary society, • extend and disseminate knowledge and encourage its application, • develop a community of scholar, students and staff in which understanding and wisdom can grow and flourish. ORGANIZATIONS STRUCTURE The Kathmandu University is governed by the University’s Senate, which is its apex body. The Prime Minister is the Chairperson of the Senate. Members of the Senate include Pro-Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Registrar and Deans of the University, Representatives from the Parliament, Industry, Mayors of Banepa and Dhulikhel Municipalities, academicians, donors, concerned government officials, faculty and student representatives and librarian. The Executive Committee, headed by the Vice-Chancellor, is responsible for carrying out policy decisions taken by the Senate. The Academic Council is the focal body of the University in academic matters. Its main responsibility is to enhance the academic standard of the university. It determines the standard and quality of teaching, curriculum, methods of evaluation, nature and types of examinations, and prescribes teaching materials. It also sets the eligibility criteria for admission of students. LOCATION The university is located about 28 km east of Kathmandu between Dhulikhel and Banepa towns. The towns of Dhulikhel and Banepa accommodate a great number of students and are expected to grow as university towns. The University has pleasing and peaceful environmental to support educational atmosphere. Located in the hilltops, with an area of 17 hectares, the university provides a panoramic view of central and eastern Himalayan ranges that include famous peaks like the Everest. ACADEMIC PROGRAM The University offers the academic and short-term programs through its six schools: School of Science, School of Management, School of Engineering, School of Arts, School of Education and School of Medical Sciences. Each school has a Faculty Board that functions under the supervision of the Academic Council. The Faculty Board of each School is responsible for approving its academic programs. Different subject committees under the Faculty Board recommend the curricula for different programs and review them periodically. The University first granted affiliation to a private medical college, Manipal College of Medical Sciences, at Pokhara to start MBBS program in December 1994. Since then seven other medical/dental colleges have been granted affiliation: College of Medical Sciences, Bharatpur, Chitwan, in August 1996; Nepalgunj Medical College, Chisapani, Banke, in December 1997; Kathmandu Medical College, Kathmandu, in December 1997, Nepal Medical College, Kathmandu, in December 1997, Nobel Medical College, Morang in February 2007, Kantipur Dental College, Kathmandu in November 2007 and Lumbini Medical College, Palpa in March 2009. 1 THE SCHOOL OF MEDICAL SCIENCES Kathmandu University, School of Medical Sciences (KUSMS) is an institution established in collaboration between Kathmandu University and Dhulikhel Hospital. KUSMS launched its own constituent MBBS program in August 2001. The school has infrastructure and physical facilities at two locations: basic science building with all the required facilities is situated at a hilltop at Chaukot in the Panauti area and the university hospital is situated at Dhulikhel, within a distance of 3 km. easily accessible by a permanent road. Both are easily accessible with the main university site. Basic science department has 7 various departments with the required number of laboratories, lecture halls including PBL class rooms, audio visual facilities (media tech.), library with 24 hour Internet facility. Main university hospital, Dhulikhel Hospital is situated at Dhulikhel. Class rooms, library facilities are available separately at all sites. There are a total of 14 various clinical departments as required by the Norms. For community training and field visit there are separate sites under Dhulikhel Hospital at Kavre, Bhaktapur districts. Compulsory hostel facilities are provided. Recreation facilities are available at main university site. The school also started the postgraduate program in medical sciences since September 1999. They are MS Orthopedics (1999) at B&B Hospital, Lalitpur, MCh Neurosurgery (2000) at Bir Hospital, Kathmandu and MD pathology and MSc. Microbiology (2000) at Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Pokhara. Currently PG programs are running at B&B Hospital (MS Orthopaedics), Manipal College of Medical Sciences (MD Pathology/M.Sc.(Medical), College of Medical Sciences,Bharatpur (MD Pathology/M.Sc.(Medical) and Kathmandu Medical College (MD Pathology). In view of the shortage of the specialist medical manpower in the country as a whole and particularly in basic medical sciences, Kathmandu University has started postgraduate medical and dental programs leading to MD/MS and MDS in association with Manipal Education and Medical Group of India (Bangalore, Mangalore and Manipal) from February 2003. Since then KUSMS has also started MD/Ms programs in clinical subjects in affiliated colleges inside the country from February 2007. The school started 4 yrs. B.Sc. Human Biology Program in association with School of Science, from year 2005 August. Certificate level programs in General Medicine, Nursing, Laboratory Technology, Ophthalmology and Physiotherapy are also offered at Dhulikhel Medical Institute under the School of Medical Sciences from 1998. ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE OF SCHOOL The Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences is governed by the Health Sciences Executive Committee, which is its apex body. The Vice Chancellor is the Chairperson of the Executive Committee. Members of the Committee include Registrar, Dean, Associate Dean/Hospital Director (Constituent Program) and Chief Administrative Officer. The Dean/ Associate Dean is responsible for carrying out policy decisions taken by the Committee. The Faculty Board and Subject Committees is the focal body of the School in academic matters. MBBS/BDS PROGRAM • Admission to the MBBS/BDS course : To be eligible for selection to the MBBS/BDS program, a candidate should have: a. Completed 17 years of age, and b. Completed 10+2 years of education or Intermediate of Science (I.Sc.) or equivalent, with Biology, Chemistry, Physics and English as main subjects and he/she should have secured not less than 50% of marks in the subjects mentioned above put together and aggregate of 50% overall. or Completed Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree recognized by the University with one of the following subjects viz. Physics, Chemistry, Biology and at least one other prescribed science subject of study up to the ancillary level and he/she should have scored not less than aggregate of 50% marks; provided that such candidate shall have passed the earlier qualifying examination (10+2, I. Sc. or an equivalent examination) with the subjects Biology, Chemistry and Physics. 2 • Selection : The selection of the candidates is by: a) Kathmandu University Medical Entrance Test (KUMET) of 2 hours duration and Interview for Nepali citizens. b) Interview for Foreign candidates.
