Wichita by Alaina

Wichita by Alaina The Wichita Indians originally settled in Southern Oklahoma and Northern Texas near the Arkansas River. After the Europeans came the Wichita's moved into Kansas. That's why there is a city in Kansas called Wichita. Most Wichita people live in Oklahoma again today. The land was mainly fiat prairie land with little or no hills. The climate of this area would change with the seasons during the winter it is very cold and windy while summer time would be hot and muggy. The Wichita Indians ate corn, beans, squash, and pumpkins that they farmed themselves. The Wichita's done a lot of fishing for their meat and would also hunt for beef. The Wichita Native American tribe lived in thatched roof houses made of grass formed into the shape of tall bee hives. The men wore breech cloths with leggings sometimes which protected their legs. The women wore wrap around skirts and ponchos that were made of woven fiber and or deer skin. Men and women wore earrings in their ears and moccasins on their feet. Usually the men didn't wear shirts. When it was cold the men and women would wear buffalo robes to keep warm. Songs were important to the Wichita's, like many other tribes. They would sing various types of music like peyote songs, hymns, lullabies, morning songs, pow wow songs and dances. The Wichita Indian art is pottery, bead word, and hide paintings. The children played with toys and went to school they had many chores and they did not have regular toys like the children have today. The men hunted and protected their families while the women farmed, cooked and took care of the children. Only the men could be chiefs but both men and women did story telling, music, artwork and traditional medicine. An interesting fact I learned while researching the Wichita Native American tribe is that the men and women would tattoo their eyelids and chins primarily but would also tattoo other parts of their bodies..
