What is the excretory system? What organs make up the excretory system? Excretory System (Brainpop) Excretory system movie (2 minutes) 1 Metabolism: The process of the body coverting food into energy. As a result of metabolism, there are waste products. Functions of the Excretory System: The function of the excretory system to remove wastes from the body. These wastes include water, CO2, nitrogen, salts, and heat. Four organs of the Excretory system are lungs, kidneys, liver, and the skin Lungs: Release carbon dioxide and water from the process of respiration. Liver: The liver stores sugar until it is needed in the blood. Amino acids release nitrogen when they are changed into sugars. Nitrogen is changed by the liver into urea. Urea is a major substance in urine which is released from the body through the urethra. Skin: The skin releases urea, water and salt from the body through perspiration. Perspiration also helps to cool the body. Kidneys: The main organ of the excretory system. They filter wastes and poisons out of the blood. Your entire blood supply passes through the kidneys about once every 30 minutes. The waste removed here is called urine which is made up of water, urea, and salts. Nephrons are small filtering units in the kidney 2 Blood Vessels Kidney: Filters impurities out of blood. Removes Kidney excess water from the body. Ureter: Tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. Bladder: The organ that Ureter holds the urine until it builds up and is released.
