! 1949 Rose Bowl Scrapbook! This item has appeal for a number of different types of collectors including those who collect memorabilia about Hollywood characters, the Rose Bowl, trains, and famous restaurants. It’s a unique, one of a kind, scrapbook that chronicles the journey of a lady in 1948 leaving from Springfield, Illinois through Chicago headed to the Rose Bowl in !Pasadena, California on New Years Day.! This lot is full of memorabilia that she acquired during that train trip. The trip begins in !Springfield, Illinois.! They left Springfield, IL on the Abe Lincoln train on 12/20/1948 and travelled to Chicago. From Chicago, they traveled cross-country to Los Angeles. From there, they went to San Diego where they attended the Rose Bowl. Included is the itinerary on the train and ticket stubs for baggage, as well as valet, barber and dining car memorabilia on the Streamliner of Los Angeles train. Includes the actual passenger tickets, seating assignment, bedroom assignment, and receipts of Mrs. F. L. Taylor. All the documentation for the railroad is in the original envelope of the Streamliner of Los !Angeles.! The particular book is probably 50 -75 pages filled with documentation of the train rides and the trains including maps, menus, postcards annotated with where, what, and when day-by-day, Includes not only photo quality postcards but also actual photos that she !took herself.! You will find included the train menu from the Golden State and Southern Pacific’s state !route.! They went to Tijuana and took pictures of street scenes in Tijuana on 12/24/48. In San Diego, they stayed at the Hotel del Coronado. There are 6 postcards of the Hotel del Coronado where she spent Christmas Day including the Luncheon Menu for Christmas !Day 1948 at the Hotel del Coronado.! On 12/26/48, they had lunch at the Casa De Manana. It includes the menu of the day !and postcards of the surrounding area. ! !A ton of pictures and postcards from various site-seeing places in the San Diego area. ! Postcards from their visit to the Will Rogers Estate with pictures of Will Rogers, his horse, and his house all identified and annotated with comments. They visited many of the movie stars of the era. They took pictures of the houses of Gary Cooper, Jane Withers, Wallace Berry, Mary Pickford, Shirley Temple, Robert Montgomery, Jack Benny, and George Burns and Gracie Allen. There are also postcards of all the houses !of the movie stars from 1948.! On January 1, 1949, went to the Rose Bowl parade and then the Rose Bowl game. Collection includes the parade program from Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade New Years Day. There are also postcards from the same. Also, there are 12 actual !photos of floats in the Rose Bowl Parade annotated with descriptions.! A original menu from the original Big Boy Hamburger restaurant is included in the !collection! More pictures were taken in Los Angeles in 1949. Pictures were taken of famous restaurants including the El Capitan Dinner Theatre featuring Ken Murray’s Blackouts of !1949. Original ticket and program included.! The original program from the Carthay Dinner Theatre for “Portrait of Jennie” January 9, 1949, produced by David O. Selznik. Players were portrayed by Joseph Cotton, Ethel !Barrymore, and Lillian Gish.! Included is the original menu and postcards Lawry’s The Prime Rib in Beverly Hills. !They were there on/around January 9, 1949.! !There are photographs of the old Hollywood Star Hotel. ! Ticket stubs are included from 11 ABC broadcast shows including Lucky Strikes present Your Lucky Strike with Don Ameche, The Curt Massey Show, The Jack Smith Show with !Dinah Shore, Abbott and Costello Show, and many others.! You will find pictures from the NBC broadcasting studios 1/31/1949. There is an original program from the Campbell Soup Presents “Double or Nothing” 1/31/1949 signed by !Walter O’Keefe.! They also visited the CBS studios with pictures and postcards and personal letters !1949. They spent time at Universal Studios in Hollywood. Included are maps and pictures of Hollywood and Vine. There are also actual photographs of various sites including photos of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. There are 2 autographed postcards from Chingwan Lee who starred in the Good Earth, and postcards and photos of Hollywood Bowl. There are also theatre programs from Hollywood and tickets, and pictures of the !Beverly Hills Hotel. ! There are more postcards of Hollywood, and a map of where the movie and radio stars !live in Hollywood/Beverly Hills from 1949. Also, there are lots of postcards of same.! Included is a large site-seeing map of Southern California, the official program from the Santa Anita Racetrack from 1948-1949, postcards from Arcadia San Marino, and pictures, tickets and information from the Daylight Limited Sa Diego to Los Angeles train.! ! From there, the trip goes on to San Francisco with maps of San Francisco, postcards, an 8x10 color pictures of the coastline, 8x10 of Market Street, photos and pictures. On 2/15/49, they went on a site-seeing bus, the Gray Line, which includes the original ticket !and maps of sites they visited.! There, they visited the Hotel Claremont. This collection includes the Claremont menu !from 2/15/1949, postcards of same, and a coaster from the bar. ! They went on to Muir Woods National Monument. Collection includes postcards from !Feb. 1949, and actual strips of wood from the redwood trees.! There is an 8x10 color picture of the Golden Gate Bridge, and information about cable !car rides in San Francisco. The postcard photos of cable cars are from 1949. ! Also, there is an 8x10 color photo of Chinatown, and actual photos and postcards of !Chinatown in San Francisco.! You will find postcards and actual photos of Fisherman’s Wharf, San Francisco !2/16/1949. Included are pictures of Telegraph Hill in San Francisco, and also pictures of Alcatraz.! Also, there are actual photos from the Golden Gate Park Aquarium. You will also find a !daily dinner menu and coasters from the Cliff House at Seals Rock in San Francisco.! There are photos from Santa Barbara, CA including actual true photos and postcard !photos.! From there they went to Palm Springs. Postcard photos and visitor information from !Palm Springs are included.! Included are photos and tourist information from Laguna Beach including a menu from !the Victor Hugo Inn in Laguna Beach for 2/26/1949.! They traveled east, and there are ticket stubs from the Golden State Train ride. They !traveled through Tucson, AZ and so included are photos from Tuscson.! Onward east, they traveled to New Orleans. And there is a menu from La Louisiane in !New Orleans.! This is the end of the scrapbook. However, in addition to the scrapbook, you will find a collection of menus from many of the famous and some world famous restaurants !including:! The Brown Derby in Hollywood.
