My Dad, Elmer, owns just such a rifle, in .300 ONE Savage, that he bought in the late 1950s for the exorbitant price of $85. My Dad is 76 years old now and had shot THRILL more deer with that rifle than I’ll probably ever see while Page 10 hunting. As he started to do more moose hunting (he lives in the province of Ontario in Canada) he bought a pump .30-06 sometime in the 1980s and no longer hunted with his .300 Savage. Well, last fall I was able to bring him Lena Miculek Afentul down here to Texas in the Rio Grande Valley for a few “firsts” for him. It was the first time he had ever hunted The New Face outside of Canada, it was the first time that he had har- vested a feral pig with his Savage, and his first javelina of Ladies’ 3-Gun harvest. Although I had to top off the rifle with a scope, as Page 48 he doesn’t see open sights properly anymore, he told me afterwards that he had forgotten “how much he loved that little rifle” and that using it again “brought back a lot of great memories” for him. It was a great pleasure for me to 1895: be there and see him again use his big game rifle of many years. Thanks again, John, for the article. I hope that one Winchester day again, my Dad can come down and use his .300 Sav- age for some more memories for both of us.
