Sars,1859 Bohuslän-N Norway-Barents Sea-Spitsbergen-Iceland-Greenland-Faeroes-Shetlands N.B.: This is one of several preliminary check-lists, covering S. Scandinavian marine animal (and partly marine S. (Strictoscalpellum) nymphocola Hoek,1883 protoctist) taxa. Some financial support from (or via) NKMB (Nordiskt Kollegium för Marin Biologi), during the last Shetlands-Norw. Sea-E Greenland-Spitsbergen & Arctic Seas years of the existence of this organisation (until 1993), is thankfully acknowledged. The primary purpose of these checklists is to facilitate for everyone, trying to identify organisms from the area, to know which species that earlier S. (Strictoscalpellum) cornutum G.O. Sars,1879 have been encountered there, or in neighbouring areas. A secondary purpose is to facilitate for non-experts to find as Faeroes-Norw. Sea-Spitsbergen & Arctic Seas correct names as possible for organisms, including names of authors and years of description. So far these checklists S. (Strictoscalpellum) hamatum G.O. Sars,1879 are very preliminary. Due to restricted access to literature there are (some known, and probably many unknown) Shetlands-off Norway S of Lofoten-off SW Spitsbergen omissions in the lists. Certainly also several errors may be found, especially regarding taxa like Plathelminthes and Nematoda, where the experience of the compiler is very rudimentary. The credibility of some other lists, containing S. (Arcoscalpellum Hoek,1907) hispidum G.O. Sars,1890 taxa like e.g. Porifera, where, at least in certain subtaxa, taxonomic confusion seems to prevail, is certainly also Trondheim-N Norway suboptimal so far. Species found in South Scandinavia, as well as from neighbouring areas, chiefly the British Isles, have been S. (Episcalpellum Broch,1924) striolatum G.O. Sars,1877 considered, as some of them may show to have a slightly more northern distribution, than what is known today. off NE Faeroes-Norw. Sea-S Spitsbergen & Arctic Seas However, species with a typical Lusitanian distribution, with their northern distribution limit around France or Pollicipes Leach,1817 Southern British Isles, have as a rule been omitted here, albeit a few species with probable norhern limits around the = Mitella Oken,1815 (nomen rejicendum, ICZN Op. 417) British Isles are listed here until distribution patterns are better known. Arctic Taxa, known only from areas north of N Norway are probably not as well represented in this list as they should be.The compiler would be very grateful for P. pollicipes (Gmelin,1789) every correction of presumptive lapses and omittances an initiated reader could make. = Lepas pollicipes Gmelin,1789 In the context below, Crustacea is ranked as a subphylum (within phylum Arthropoda) with the following SW Cornwall - French & Iberian coasts superclasses: Maxillopoda, Remipedia, Phyllopoda (Branchiopoda), Ostracoda & Malacostraca. I am fully aware of the incompleteness of this list, but for the moment I cannot advance much further because of limited library resources. LEPADOMORPHA Pilsbry,1916 Intentionally taxa from neighbouring areas have been listed, as some of them probably will show to occur in Scandinavian waters. Lepadoidea Darwin,1851 N.B.
