School Newsletter Trinity Academy Eppleby Forcett and Middleton Tyas Proud to be Church of England Academies Friday 9th October 2020 Autumn Term - Issue 5 A MESSAGE FROM MRS McLEAN Dear Parents and Carers, October is 'Black History Month' and we are utilising this as a launch pad to focus our teaching and learning around diversity in the present day, as well as finding out about some significant individuals from history. At the end of this month each class will share the work they have done on a whole school display. Do watch out for some examples on Class Dojo / Tapestry. Next week we shall be holding our parent consultations. This year they are being conducted via telephone. You should have received a link via Dojo/email to choose your preferred date and time slot. Please be aware that if you do not answer at your allocated time you will need to contact the school office to rebook an alternative slot. It has been brought to our attention that some acts of vandalism have taken place around the outside of the school, particularly around the parent carpark. Please can I ask you to be vigilant and if you have any further information then please contact Richmond police. Over the next couple of weeks we will be changing the way we communicate with you from Middleton Tyas. We will no longer send emails via ParentPay, instead we will use our Management Information System (Bromcom), which will send the email direct to your inbox from school. This will make emails clearer for all our parents. Eppleby already use direct emails to communicate so nothing will change for those parents. ParentPay will still be used to pay for lunches, wraparound, preschool sessions and trips, etc. Please make sure school have your up to date email address. Thank you so much to all those who have made Harvest donations. There is still time to donate, if you haven't already done so and would like to. Although our usual Harvest festival is not able to take place we have planned activities for each class that we are hoping to share with you soon. We have had a thank you from the Stanwick group of churches for the wonderful Harvest display that children at our Eppleby Forcett setting put together for everyone to see in church. Have a lovely weekend and stay safe! Kind regards, Mrs D. McLean Head of School CONTACT WITH SCHOOL From time to time you may need to contact the school. Preschool: Preschool's book of the week has been Handa's Surprise based in Kenya. The children counted some oranges, compared their size and used the segments to create some patterns and art. They then investigated a pineapple. Over the coming weeks, they will be learning about Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan environmental crusader, famous for planting millions of trees. Reception: The children have been learning all about feelings this week. They have talked about how they could help each other and how they can keep their minds healthy as well as their bodies. They enjoyed learning about positive thinking and trying some laughter yoga. In Maths, the children have done some excellent sorting and grouping and in Phonics, they have been learning the new letter sounds 'g,o,c,k'; some tricky for now words 'I, the'; as well as some more high frequency words. Year 1: This week Year 1 have enjoyed reading their class story. They loved the amazing creations that the main character invented for his car; from a jet booster to help it fly through the clouds, to a swimming pool inside the boot. The children took inspiration and went on to design their own 'super cars' with football pitches in the footwells, spiky tyres to climb on any terrain and even ice cream machine handbrakes. It has been lovely to see them enjoying the story so much and even better to see the fantastic inventions of their own. Year 2: The class have worked really hard this ‘mechanical’ week. They have looked at their 2, 5 and 10 times tables. In English, they have worked on their new class book 'Papa's Mechanical Fish’. The children carefully identified different materials in the classroom in Science and they have also enjoyed PE, PHSCE and RE lessons. Another busy week! Year 3: Year 3 have been super busy studying their Romans topic. They have started to create their own 3D Colosseums identifying where different people sat or stood, worked with Roman numerals in Maths and listened to the story of Romulus and Remus and how they discovered Rome. In Science they have studied their teeth which led to interesting discussions about children having less teeth than adults and identifying their incisors, canines and molars. Year 4: This week, Year 4 have been using their knowledge of place value to solve problems using addition with four- digit numbers. It has been quite tricky, but the children persevered and got there in the end. The children have been using their skills as writers to make their writing much more interesting by using expanded noun phrases and by using statements, questions, commands and exclamations. The class have continued their research into the Romans and found out that the ancient Roman road called Dere Street went past Middleton Tyas up the A1 and crossed the River Tees at Piercebridge, where the ruins of the Roman bridge can still be seen! Year 5: In Year 5 this week, the children have been problem solving in Maths, and in English they have been writing sentences with relative clauses. They continue to follow the ups and downs of life as an evacuee in their class text. Olive and Cliff are now living with Ephraim, the Lighthouse Keeper but he is a mysterious character. In other areas of the curric- ulum, the children have drawn a scientific diagram of how their circulatory system works and they have written down their ideas for being mindful (see the photo of our class display on Dojo). Year 6: The children have been working hard investigating topics of their choice to produce some rather fantastic information texts about WW2. They have also been continuing their work on division and applied their learning to some tricky problem solving activities. In PE, the children have enjoyed some ball control work in football. It was great to see all children getting involved and working together superbly. Well done to Jude S and Harry for being our PE stars of the week! Finally, in Science the children have investigated the circulatory system and how oxygen and nutrients are transported around the body. Our Stars of the Week are: Mrs James (Reception): Felicity Graham for some fantastic sorting in Maths, positive thinking and talking about her feelings. Miss Bartle (Y1): Georgina Hawkins for always trying your best in all aspects of learning and for being a fantastic role model to your friends. It is rare to not see your hand up ready to give things a try, keep up the super work Georgina! Ms Ray (Y2): Bertie Whent for taking pride in his Reading, Writing and Maths. Miss Yarrow (Y3): Edward Fretwell for being really keen in maths and contributing to class discussions. Well done! Mr Keane (Y4): Nell Downing for her exemplary attitude to learning and as a fantastic example to others. Mrs Parker (Y5): Charlie Beadle for super focus in lessons this week. Charlie has been trying really hard with his problem solving in Maths and he wrote a super piece of dialogue between two characters in English. Well done Charlie! Mr McCulloch (Y6): A huge well done to Ella Rose for being our star of the week. Ella always works so hard and gives 100% to everything. She is the perfect Year 6, well done Ella!
