There is a natu- ral tendency, looking back, to regard it as always having been re- KIM L. LOVING earned a B.A. from Graceland College and a juris doctor from the University of Kansas. He most recently served as president of the Eastern Great Lakes (USA) Mission Center of the Community of Christ in Kirtland, Ohio, and formerly practiced law for twenty-three years in St. Joseph, Missouri. He presented an earlier version of this paper at the Mormon History Association annual meeting in Kirtland in May 2003 and died of cancer on February 3, 2004.
