Contrabands and Freedmen's Cemetery Memorial

Contrabands and Freedmen’s Cemetery Memorial Design Competition 2008 The following list is taken from the book Alexandria, Virginia Death Records, 1863-1868 (The Gladwin Record) and 1869-1896 by Wesley E. Pippenger and published by Willow Bend Books of Westminster, Maryland. It is reproduced here with their very generous permission. Discovered by Wes Pippenger at the Library of Virginia, this document is generally referred to as the Gladwin Record. While certainly begun in March 1863 by Superintendent of Contrabands Rev. Albert Gladwin, the record continued to be maintained by his successors and by the local offi ce of the Freedmen’s Bureau until January 1869. Entries include name; date of the report of death or burial (which roughly correspond to the death date); age; next of kin or person making the report; residence or place of death, or both (presumably, the locations were usually one and the same); and additional comments about burial or cause of death. Ideally, each entry would include all such data, but oft en some information was not supplied. Mr. Pippenger has reorganized the chronological list into alphabetical order. The published information has here been further edited. Mr. Pippenger faithfully transcribed personal names and place names verbatim. Here, however, originally misspelled street names have been corrected, and most abbreviations have been spelled out to assist those who may not be familiar with Alexandria. Several names and associated data have been added, based upon the information contained in an 1865 memorandum book probably kept by Capt. James Ferree and now contained in the National Archives and Records Administration, Record Group 105, Records of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, Entry 3878. Minor edits of the entries relating to soldiers’ deaths at L’Ouverture Hospital have been informed by The Roll of Honor. Names of Soldiers, Victims of the Rebellion, Buried in the National Cemetery at Alexandria, Virginia (Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Offi ce, 1866) and by Edward A. Miller, Jr.’s article “Volunteers for Freedom: Black Civil War Soldiers in Alexandria National Cemetery, Part II” in Historic Alexandria Quarterly, Winter 1998. The list commences in March 1863, nearly halfway through the Civil War. As a consequence, it does not include the deaths of all the “Contrabands” in Alexandria. At least 1,200 African Americans has perished in the immediate vicinity of Alexandria between the beginning of the war and the establishment of Freedmen’s Cemetery. Therefore, while it is not complete, the list contains entries for many individuals who died before the cemetery opened. Most of these were interred at Penny Hill, Alexandria’s public cemetery. The entries in bold are for individuals who were not, or almost certainly not, buried in Freedmen’s Cemetery. The entries in italics are soldiers who were fi rst buried in Freedmen’s Cemetery and re-interred in Alexandria National Cemetery. There are a couple of entries for soldiers which are marked by asterisks (*); these indicate soldiers who were buried in Freedmen’s Cemetery for which there is no known record of re-interment in Alexandria National Cemetery. They may yet lie in Freedmen’s Cemetery because of a bureaucratic error, or perhaps they are among the unknowns in the National Cemetery. Lett ers, words or numbers which are underlined indicate spellings which Mr. Pippenger considered questionable or representing possible mistakes, omissions, etc. ABBOTT, Laura, 27 SEP 1864, 10y, Princess St. bet.
