First, the area was a wooden Illyrian-Celtic settlement, then a Roman city and capital, a medieval town with many masters, an oriental palanka with minarets, a regiment's frontier town, a craft and trade centre, and, finally, a modern industrial city full of new history. Among the main sites in Sremska Mitrovica are the remains of the Roman Sirmium. Today, visitors can see the remains of the Imperial Palace and some parts of the old town core in Žitni Square. Other sites in Mitrovica include the Basilica of St. Dimitri, the Museum of the Srem Region and the Lazar Vozarević's Gallery After the visit to Sremska Mitrovica we will head towards Zasavica. Zasavica is located just several kilometres across the Sava river from the town of Sremska Mitrovica. The Zasavica bog is a marshy lowland in the floodplain of the Sava river. Zasavica is a Special Nature Reserve, formed in 1997 and placed under state protection as the category I natural treasure of exquisite value. It is proclaimed an Important Bird Area and since 2001 it is a member of the Europark Federation. Today, visitors have an opportunity to take a boat ride in the swamp, see endemic animal special up close, try traditional recipes, and walk around the unique landscape. .
