The Consecration

The Consecration

The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York The Consecration of The Revd Canon Sophie Jelley formerly Diocesan Director of Mission, Discipleship and Ministry in the Diocese of Durham and Canon Missioner of Durham Cathedral to be Bishop of Doncaster by The Most Revd and Rt Hon Stephen Cottrell Lord Archbishop of York, Primate of England and Metropolitan assisted by the Bishop of Durham and the Bishop of Sheffield Monday 21 September 2020 at 11.00 am Matthew, Apostle and Evangelist The Consecration and Ordination of a Bishop The ministry of the church is the ministry of Christ, its chief shepherd and high priest. Those who are ordained are called to share Christ’s work, to speak in his name and build up the Church of which Christ is the head. This service of ordination perpetuates a pattern of ministry in direct continuity—through a long line of succession—with the apostles. Just as Jesus commissioned his first disciples, so by the laying on of hands the President will commission this disciple to mission. That is, to witness to the resurrection and to preach the good news of salvation in all the world. The particular role of the Bishop—while remaining a deacon and priest—is to proclaim and guard the faith, to preside of the sacraments, to lead the Church’s prayer and to hand on its ministry. During the service the candidate will be asked to confirm her commitment to these priorities. All who are present will be asked to undertake to support the ordination of this candidate, not least because as bishop she will act not just on behalf of particular local Christian communities, but of the whole Church. This is followed by the invocation of the Holy Spirit and the laying on of hands. Sophie will be anointed with Chrism, signifying her role of leadership within the royal priesthood of Christ’s people; she will receive a copy of the Holy Scriptures, both to remind her of her duty to proclaim the gospel and of the centrality of God’s Word; and she will receive a pastoral staff, symbolising her sharing in the ministry of Christ the Good Shepherd In accordance with ancient tradition, three bishops are required for the consecration of a new bishop. The Archbishop, as Metropolitan, presides over the whole service, but his ministry is visibly shared with the other ordaining bishops. This sharing of ministry illustrates and embodies our shared apostolic vocation and demonstrates the unity of the Church we serve. We are all turned outwards towards the world that God loved so much that he sent his only Son. We are prepared for that goal and end of all things, when Christ himself will present to the Father a world made perfect by his work—when all God’s people share in the joyful communion of love the binds the Father and the Son, in the unity of the Holy Spirit. The Ordinand Sophie grew up in Brighton which has given her a life-long love of pebbly beaches and eclectic music. Proud sister to Simeon, Sophie spent summers volunteering for adventures with disability organisations. Joining a church youth group at 14 years old changed her life as she was encouraged to follow Jesus. She went on to study Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Leeds in the early 90s where she met her husband Chris. They married a year after graduation and Sophie began training for ordination at Wycliffe Hall theological college in Oxford where she gained an MPhil in Theology (Modern Christian Doctrine) from the University of Oxford and made many friends who have become great companions through all the ups and downs of life. Sophie was ordained deacon in 1997 and priested in 1998, in the Diocese of Bradford, serving her title post at St Peter’s Church in Shipley where they valued the warm welcome of the people of West Yorkshire. In 2000, Sophie and Chris became mission partners with Church Mission Society, serving at Uganda Christian University with their son Oscar. Chris established a computer department, and Sophie was teaching and leading the children’s ministry. Returning to the UK when son Dylan was born, Sophie became resident minister of St John the Evangelist, Churt in the Diocese of Guildford in 2003, where they delighted in village life and later their daughter Alice was born. In 2010, Sophie became Vicar of St Andrew’s in Burgess Hill in the Diocese of Chichester; in some ways returning to her Brighton roots. She was appointed Assistant Diocesan Director of Ordinands in 2013 in addition to her role; a hugely rewarding ministry. In 2015, Sophie was appointed Diocesan Director of Mission, Discipleship and Ministry and Residentiary Canon Missioner at Durham Cathedral. She has loved the variety of this role, and the generosity of the people of the North East, among them fabulous colleagues from whom she has learned much. Sophie plays the violin and viola and is a soprano singer, she also likes to knit, sew and try her hand at creative projects. Chris works as a Chief Technology Officer, Oscar is a university student, Dylan a sixth former and Alice at secondary school. Animal lovers, the Jelley family currently have a cockerpoo called Hugo, two indoor cats Bilbo and Sugar, five chickens and a leopard Gecko. Sophie has been a keen runner for many years and is training for the London marathon in support of the learning disability charity ‘Mencap’. In her spare time Sophie enjoys films, novels, and a nice glass of white with friends. Sophie’s Consecration was unable to take place as planned on 25 March 2020. However, Sophie was licensed as ‘Bishop-designate of Doncaster and Principal Commissary to the Bishop of Sheffield’ in a virtual Zoom meeting by the Bishop of Sheffield on the same day. Sophie has already begun her ministry in the Northern Province and particularly in the Diocese of Sheffield, trusting as ever in God’s faithfulness now and for the years to come. 3 Music in the service will be sung by a cantor. The organ is played by Benjamin Morris, Assistant Director of Music, York Minster. Private cameras and video recorders may not be used before or during the service. The congregation is asked to ensure that all mobile telephones are switched off. Communion is administered in one kind only. If you normally receive communion in your own church, you are welcome to receive communion here. If you do not wish to take communion but would like to receive a blessing, please come forward bringing your service booklet with you to let the minister know. Gluten-free communion wafers are available. If you require a gluten-free communion wafer, when the time comes to receive communion, please ask the minister for a gluten-free wafer. 4 At 10.50, the Dean welcomes the congregation and notices are given. At 10.55, the Bishop-designate takes the Oath of Allegiance to the Sovereign. I, Sophie Rebecca Jelley, Clerk in Holy Orders, do swear by Almighty God that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, Her heirs and successors according to law. So help me God. At 11.00, a bell is rung, and prayers are sung in the South Quire Aisle. Please stand. 5 ¶ The Gathering and Presentation The Greeting The Archbishop greets the people Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All Blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. There is one body and one spirit. All There is one hope to which we were called; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, All one God and Father of all. Peace be with you All and also with you. The Archbishop introduces the service God calls his people to follow Christ, and forms us into a royal priesthood, a holy nation, to declare the wonderful deeds of him who has called us out of darkness into his marvellous light. The Church is the Body of Christ, the people of God and the dwelling-place of the Holy Spirit. In baptism the whole Church is summoned to witness to God’s love and to work for the coming of his kingdom. To serve this royal priesthood, God has given particular ministries. Bishops are ordained to be shepherds of Christ’s flock and guardians of the faith of the apostles, proclaiming the gospel of God’s kingdom and leading his people in mission. Obedient to the call of Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit, they are to gather God’s people and celebrate with them the sacraments of the new covenant. Thus formed into a single communion of faith and love, the Church in each place and time is united with the Church in every place and time. Please remain standing. 6 Prayers of Penitence We run the race set before us, surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. Therefore let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which clings so closely, bringing them to Jesus in penitence and faith. All Father eternal, giver of light and grace, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour, in what we have thought, in what we have said and done, through ignorance, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We have wounded your love and marred your image in us. We are sorry and ashamed, and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past; and lead us out from darkness to walk as children of light.
